Seropositive Neuromyelitis Optica in a Case of Undiagnosed Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Neuro-Rheumatological Conundrum
In this study, a 35-year-old Indian man with an undiagnosed progressive axial spondyloarthropathy (i.e., AS) is reported presenting with acute-onset longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis, a clinical subset of NMOSD. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), a primary demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), is an autoimmune astrocytopathy against foot processes of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels, which manifests with optic neuritis, longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM), area-postrema syndrome, brainstem syndrome diencephalic syndrome, and cerebral syndrome.1-4 Ankylosing spo...

Routine childhood vaccination programme coverage, El Salvador, 2011-In search of timeliness.
Abstract While assessing immunization programmes, not only vaccination coverage is important, but also timely receipt of vaccines. We estimated both vaccination coverage and timeliness, as well as reasons for non-vaccination, and identified predictors of delayed or missed vaccination, for vaccines of the first two years of age, in El Salvador. We conducted a cluster survey among children aged 23-59 months. Caregivers were interviewed about the child immunization status and their attitudes towards immunization. Vaccination dates were obtained from children immunization cards at home or at health facilities. We refe...

IJERPH, Vol. 15, Pages 1432: In Search of Factors Negatively Affecting Vaccine Immunity to Pertussis in Preschool Children Before the Administration of the First Booster
Conclusions: Immunomodulation considered on the example of titre of IgG antibody to pertussis can serve as a useful model of the assessment of development of acquired immunity after mandatory vaccinations.

Search of Hepatitis-B infection in relatives of chronic carriers in the province of Huanta, Ayacucho, Peru.
In conclusion, we found a high frequency of HBV in relatives of carriers of HBsAg. This strategy would help identify chronic carriers that can be treated and to contribute to a plan for the elimination of HBV. PMID: 30726419 [PubMed - in process]

Optimization of the Production of Inactivated Clostridium novyi Type B Vaccine Using Computational Intelligence Techniques.
Abstract Clostridium novyi causes necrotic hepatitis in sheep and cattle, as well as gas gangrene. The microorganism is strictly anaerobic, fastidious, and difficult to cultivate in industrial scale. C. novyi type B produces alpha and beta toxins, with the alpha toxin being linked to the presence of specific bacteriophages. The main strategy to combat diseases caused by C. novyi is vaccination, employing vaccines produced with toxoids or with toxoids and bacterins. In order to identify culture medium components and concentrations that maximized cell density and alpha toxin production, a neuro-fuzzy algorithm was a...

Spontaneous reports of primary ovarian insufficiency after vaccination: A review of the vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS)
CONCLUSIONS: POI is rarely reported to VAERS. Most reports contained limited diagnostic information and were submitted after published cases of POI following HPV vaccination. Results of our review do not suggest a safety concern.PMID:36732165 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.12.038

Decreased online hepatitis information seeking during the COVID-19 pandemic: an Infodemiology study
Conclusions: Our study found decreased global online interest in viral hepatitis during the pandemic. Moreover, higher online interest in hepatitis was observed in countries with a lower gross domestic product and high viral hepatitis and HIV prevalence. We demonstrated that global online interest toward viral hepatitis could be assessed through the infodemiologic approach using Google Trends ™.

Drought in the Semiarid Region of Brazil: Exposure, Vulnerabilities and Health Impacts from the Perspectives of Local Actors
Conclusion The results obtained from this research shows, in general, the fragility in the social and political infrastructure necessary to improve the living conditions of populations, particularly those that depend on family agriculture in drought prone areas. The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

Optimization of a cellular HBV infection model for use in high-throughput drug screening
In this study, we optimized an in vitro HBV infection model consisting of two cell lines: HepAD38 cells, which are able to produce infectious HBV; and HepG2-NTCP cells, which are susceptible to HBV infection. We showed that prolonged production of HBV in the "donor" cells and HBV inoculation of the "acceptor" cells simultaneously with seeding improves the established procedure. This modified protocol was proven effective in experiments involving compounds with known activity against HBV, suggesting its utility for future high-throughput screening. Keywords: HBV; HBV in vitro models; HepG2-NTCP; HepAD38.PMID:33827225 | DOI:10.4149/av_2021_110
