No, the Flu Shot Will Not Make You Spread the Flu
(WASHINGTON) — Getting the flu shot won’t make you spread the disease more, doesn’t weaken your immune system but it does offer some protection from getting infected, despite misleading claims on social media. A post on a site called thewilddoc claimed that being vaccinated does more harm than good, citing a January peer-reviewed study. But one of the main authors of that study called the post “untrue” and “misleading,” not accurately interpreting the study. In January, Dr. Donald Milton and a team of researchers at the University of Maryland published a study in the journal Procee...

Thousands Will Die From Flu This Year, Doctors Predict
NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — Although concerns are mounting across the nation of Ebola exposure, doctors fear the focus could be diverting attention from another potential threat: the flu. “It potentially could become an epidemic if we become distracted and we don’t get our annual flu vaccine. We’re worried about other things, things like Ebola,” pediatrician Janesri De Silva told KCAL9’s Serene Branson. De Silva is chair of pediatrics at Northridge Hospital Medical Center and runs urgent-care clinics for children and teenagers. “We are all worried about Ebola and if we look ...

Flu Strikes New England Earlier Than Usual
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire health officials say three adults in three different counties have tested positive for the influenza virus. The Department of Health and Human Services is encouraging all residents above the age of 6 months to get vaccinated against the flu as soon as possible. 40 Percent Of Doctors, Nurses Have Gone To Work With The Flu, Survey Finds
CBS Local — As flu season kicks into high gear, a new report is revealing the unhealthy habits of the people entrusted with keeping Americans healthy. According to a survey of nearly 2,000 healthcare professionals, over 40 percent who say they’ve worked while sick actually had the flu as they met patients. “The statistics are alarming. At least one earlier study has shown that patients who are exposed to a healthcare worker who is sick are five times more likely to get a healthcare-associated infection,” lead author Dr. Sophia Chiu wrote in the survey’s release. “We recommend all healt...

HealthWatch: Could Getting Breathed On Give You The Flu?
BOSTON (CBS) — Flu activity continues to be widespread across the country and the season could be the worst in years. Almost 9,000 Americans have been hospitalized since early October and at least 30 kids have died so far. As Dr. Mallika Marshall reports, a new study may help explain why the flu tends to spread so fast. Researchers at the University of Maryland looked at 142 patients with a positive flu test and analyzed their breath samples during the first few days of symptoms. They found that 39% of the samples were positive for infectious flu virus. Typically when we think of how the flu and cold viruses get circ...

Flu Hospitalizations Are Higher Than Any Year on Record, CDC Reports
As flu activity continues to increase in many parts of the U.S., CDC officials say hospitalization rates are on pace to exceed any year on record. CDC officials have in recent weeks compared this year’s unusually active flu season with that of 2014-2015. But CDC Acting Director Anne Schuchat said on a call with reporters Friday that hospitalization rates observed at this point in the season have surpassed even that high-severity year, and by season’s end could eclipse its 710,000 total admissions. The hospitalization rate is higher than that of any year since 2010, when the CDC began tracking the epidemic using...
