Cancer and fertility: optimizing communication between patients and healthcare providers
This article reviews the status of guidelines and recommendations for communication between patients with cancer and healthcare providers (HCPs) concerning fertility issues. Recent findings The timing, the type of information provided, and the openness of HCPs can all affect how patients with cancer perceive discussions regarding fertility concerns and preservation. In addition, whether such discussions occur is associated with intrinsic factors, such as age and sex of the patients as well as HCP's knowledge level. It has also been found that the patients have different needs for information regarding fertility preserva...

A Focus Group Study of Provider and Patient Perceptions of Communicating Advanced Care Planning Wishes Using Digital Storytelling
Advanced care planning (ACP) and end-of-life discussions are especially difficult among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as a result of patients' lack of trust in family and providers, HIV-related stigma, misunderstood spirituality concerns, social isolation, and other factors. Previous research has demonstrated that relatively few persons living with HIV/AIDS engage in ACP, yet developing culturally sensitive methods of ACP is imperative. One such method is digital storytelling, a video narrative that can be used to share ideas or aspects of a life story. Th...

PLISSIT Interventions and Sexual Functioning: Useful Tools for Social Work in Palliative Care?
Authors: Bennett MR Abstract Discussing sexual health with healthcare patients and their partners is difficult and often avoided. The PLISSIT model is a framework to effectively initiate the conversation about sexual concerns. This rapid review and small meta-analysis explores and clarifies knowledge about the effectiveness of PLISSIT in resolving sexual dysfunction and glean insight into its utility as a social work intervention in a palliative care setting. Evidence from 15 interventional studies was synthesized. Cohen's d-index served as the meta-analytic effect size statistic for each individual study. Signific...

Mapping end-of-life and anticipatory medications in palliative care patients using a longitudinal general practice database
Palliat Support Care. 2021 Mar 10:1-7. doi: 10.1017/S1478951521000092. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: End-of-life and anticipatory medications (AMs) have been widely used in various health care settings for people approaching end-of-life. Lack of access to medications at times of need may result in unnecessary hospital admissions and increased patient and family distress in managing palliative care at home. The study aimed to map the use of end-of-life and AM in a cohort of palliative care patients through the use of the Population Level Analysis and Reporting Data Space and to discuss the results through stakeho...

Older patients’ and their caregivers’ understanding of advanced care planning
Purpose of review The aim of this study was to review the recent literature (2019–2021) on older patients’ and their caregivers’ understanding of advance care planning. Recent findings Recent studies highlight the continued gaps in knowledge about advance care planning for older adults with cancer and their caregivers both domestically and abroad. The recent literature also revealed that there is a lack of research methodology to assess knowledge of advance care planning reliably and validly in older adults with cancer and their caregivers given the lack of uniform scales to measure knowledge of advance ca...
