Inside My Manic Mind
I often think people misconceptualize bipolar disorder. They hear it and think of a person who is kind and gentle, and then, out of the blue, they turn into The Hulk; almost a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde scenario. While it’s true during a manic episode some may become angry, I don’t think that is the typical response. Instead, I think it is much more common for one to become elated, euphoric, almost in a constant high state. Those in a state of mania take on a sense of grandiosity, feeling they are invincible. Often they spend money at an alarming pace, sleep less, and make seemingly novel connections to completely u...

Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery
My husband often tells me I have obsessive-compulsive disorder: Sometimes when I leave the house I check that I have locked the door, often going back two, three, even four times to ensure that the deadbolt is secure. I also do this with the oven, the stove, and my curling iron. Although rationally I know I have turned them off or locked them, my compulsion to relieve my anxiety outweighs my rational mind. (Luckily, I don’t do it every time I leave the house.) This is how we typically think of OCD: a series of checking, or the constant washing of hands. But, as Janet Singer and Seth Gillihan write in Overcoming OCD...

When Experts Miss Trauma in Children
It has been estimated that each year, over one million children in the United States are misdiagnosed with a mental illness that could be better explained by trauma. That’s a lot of children inaccurately being labeled with a mental illness. The problem of misdiagnosis is important. If we misdiagnose or mislabel a child with a mental illness, we run the risk of recommending or providing treatment that will potentially not alleviate or address the child’s core problems. For example, one child displays many attention problems at school. He is diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treat...

OCD, Medication, and Genetic Testing
If you’ve read a good number of my articles over the years, you might remember that my son Dan had some bad experiences with medication used to treat his obsessive-compulsive disorder. He was overmedicated, wrongly medicated, and improperly weaned from various combinations of 10 different medications over a 15-month period. Not only didn’t medication help him, it hurt him. For my son, the best meds turned out to be no meds at all. There are, however, many OCD sufferers who do appear to be helped by medication (usually in combination with exposure and response prevention therapy). But even for those who benefit from tak...
