Novel insights into modifiable risk factors for arteriovenous fistula failure and the importance of CKD lipid profile: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Our analysis indicates that the AVF failure may be related to the increase of TC/LDL-C and the decrease of HDL-C. Although current guidelines do not consider intensive lipid-lowering therapy as necessary in patients undergoing HD, our research indicates that patients with AVF undergoing HD may need regular TC/LDL-C-lowering therapy to prevent AVF failure. However, this issue still needs well designed prospective trials.PMID:36951426 | DOI:10.1177/11297298221115557

The effect of recombinant human interferon α1b treatment of infants hospitalized with lower respiratory tract infection on subsequent wheezing
CONCLUSIONS: Early use of rhIFNα1b in infants hospitalized with lower respiratory tract infections and breastfeeding could prevent subsequent wheezing. Living in a crowded house could promote subsequent wheezing.PMID:33592175 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2020.12.005

Low performance of a SARS-CoV-2 point-of-care lateral flow immunoassay in symptomatic children during the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Despite its high specificity, in the present study, the sensitivity of LFI in children was lower (around 70%) than most reports in adults. In acute care settings, although a positive result is informative, a negative LFI test cannot rule out COVID-19 in children.PMID:34153236 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.04.010

Up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 by celastrol alleviates oxidative stress and vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease
Free Radic Biol Med. 2021 Jun 23:S0891-5849(21)00385-3. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2021.06.020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVascular calcification is very commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but there is no efficient therapy available. Oxidative stress plays critical roles in the progression of vascular calcification. Celastrol (Cel), a natural constituent derived from Chinese herbals, exhibits anti-oxidative stress activity. Here, we investigated the effect of celastrol on vascular calcification using vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), arterial rings and CKD rats. Alizarin red staining ...

Efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine in maintaining hemodynamic stability in pediatric cardiac surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The application of DEX for preoperative prophylaxis and postoperative recovery in pediatric cardiac surgery patients are effective in maintaining hemodynamic stability, and the clinical dose of DEX is not significantly related to the occurrence of pediatric adverse events which may be related to individual differences.PMID:34252370 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.05.008

Serum Cystatin C as a predictor of acute kidney injury in neonates: a meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Serum Cystatin C has a good performance in predicting neonatal AKI; therefore, it can be used as a candidate biomarker after the optimal level is determined by large prospective studies.PMID:34662539 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.08.005
