Silences and Omissions in Reporting Epidemics in Russian and Soviet Prisons, 1890-2021
J Hist Med Allied Sci. 2023 Aug 31:jrad047. doi: 10.1093/jhmas/jrad047. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPenitentiary systems serve as breeding grounds for all kinds of diseases. Drawing upon new archival materials, this article examines the history of the management and reporting of epidemics in the Russian prison system from the late Imperial period to the present day. We use the case studies of cholera (1892-1893), typhus (1932-1933), and pulmonary tuberculosis (the 1990s) to examine how the general political and social conjuncture at different times affected the response of prison authorities to epidemics to show that, no...

Tuberculosis in times of war and crisis: Epidemiological trends and characteristics of patients born in Ukraine, Germany, 2022
Euro Surveill. 2023 Jun;28(24). doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.24.2300284.ABSTRACTThe Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caused a large migration to other European countries, including Germany. This movement impacted the TB epidemiology, as Ukraine has a higher prevalence of TB and multidrug-resistant TB rates compared to Germany. Our descriptive analysis of TB surveillance data reveals important information to improve TB care in people displaced from Ukraine. We observed an expected increase in the number of TB patients born in Ukraine, which is, however, so far below WHO/Europe estimates.PMID:37318760 | DOI:10.2807/1...

Active tuberculosis screening among the displaced population fleeing Ukraine, France, February to October 2022
Euro Surveill. 2023 Mar;28(12):2300155. doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.12.2300155.ABSTRACTPersons fleeing Ukraine since February 2022 have potentially higher risk of tuberculosis (TB) vs all European Union countries. Interest of active TB screening among this population is debated and not widely adopted. In this screening intervention by a network of TB centres in France, the number needed to screen (NNS) was 862 to find one case. This experience shows that this strategy may be relevant for TB control in situations of massive displacement, similar to that following the Russian invasion.PMID:36951786 | PMC:PMC10037662 | ...
