Prevalence of Vascular Calcification in Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 4 and 5 Patients and its Correlation with Inflammatory Markers of Atherosclerosis
This study evaluated the prevalence of vascular calcification in Indian patients with CKD stages 4 and 5. This was a prospective study conducted between January 2011 and June 2012. CKD stage 4 and 5 patients of either sex aged >18 years were screened for aortic vascular calcification using digital X-ray lumbar spine and multislice computed tomography (CT) scan. In addition, details of inflammatory markers [high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin (IL-6)] were also collected. A total of 150 patients (stage 4, n = 98; stage 5, n = 56) were screened for vascular calcification, and the mean age was 56.56...

Privacy Still at Risk Despite New CBP Search Rules
International travelers, citizens and foreigners alike, enjoy reduced privacy protections at ports of entry. Thanks to the “border exception” to the Fourth Amendment, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers do not need reasonable suspicion or probable cause to search electronic devices at airports. This regrettable authority made headlines last year after CBP officers searched phones belonging to innocent Ameri can citizens. CBP has updated its electronic device search policy via a new directive. While the directive does include a welcome clarification, it states that CBP can search anyone’s electronic devices ...

The effect of an educational program for vascular access care on nurses' knowledge at dialysis centers in Khartoum State, Sudan.
This study was to evaluate the effect of an educational program for vascular access care on nurses' knowledge at nine dialysis centers in Khartoum State. This was a Quasi experimental study (pre-and post-test for the same group). Sixty-one nurses working in these HD centers were chosen by simple random sampling method. A structured face-to-face interview questionnaire based on the Kidney Dialysis Outcome Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) clinical practice guidelines for vascular access care was used. Instrument validity was determined through content validity by a panel of experts. Reliability of the instrument was tested by a p...

Construction of Digital Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Model of Rabbit Vascular Network
Publication date: Available online 24 September 2019Source: Saudi Journal of Biological SciencesAuthor(s): Qinghong Song, Yan ZhangAbstractIn order to study the construction of digital three-dimensional model of rabbit vascular network and provide a powerful basis for the model construction and image processing of human vascular network, in this study, rabbit abdominal and pelvic vessels are perfused with latex-bismuth oxide contrast agent. After that, the internal fibrous structure of the abdominal and pelvic vascular network in rabbits is studied by micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). Angiography and post-processing so...

Application of High-fat Cell Model in Steady-state Regulation of Vascular Function
Publication date: Available online 24 September 2019Source: Saudi Journal of Biological SciencesAuthor(s): Qinghong Song, Yan ZhangAbstractIn order to effectively apply the high-fat cell model to the regulation of vascular homeostasis and the repair of vascular endothelial cell injury, and to provide a new theoretical basis for the treatment of vascular homeostasis imbalance in the future, in this study, the mouse thoracic aorta tissue is extracted by using mouse endothelial cells. Western blotting and immunofluorescence resonance energy transfer (Immuno-FRET) are then used to verify the distribution and physical coupling ...

Causes of the delay in creating permanent vascular access in hemodialysis patients
This study aims to identify the physicians' perspectives regarding the reasons of delayed arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to improve the quality of CKD patients' care and prognosis and prevent complications. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on KSA nephrologists using a questionnaire which includes factors associated with delay in AVF creation, which were categorized into patient, physician, and hospital factors. The optimal timing of starting dialysis was also assessed. In a total of 212 participants, 131 (61.8%) were of consultant level, with the largest numbers being f...
