Causes of the delay in creating permanent vascular access in hemodialysis patients
This study aims to identify the physicians' perspectives regarding the reasons of delayed arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to improve the quality of CKD patients' care and prognosis and prevent complications. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on KSA nephrologists using a questionnaire which includes factors associated with delay in AVF creation, which were categorized into patient, physician, and hospital factors. The optimal timing of starting dialysis was also assessed. In a total of 212 participants, 131 (61.8%) were of consultant level, with the largest numbers being f...

Prevalence of micro and macro vascular complications and their risk factors in type 2 diabetes in Saudi Arabian population: an analysis from SHIS
CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular complications in diabetic patients poses a serious threat to public health in Saudi Arabia. A multisectoral approach needs to be undertaken to properly control and modify common risk factors at the community level.PMID:34227065 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202106_26137

Geographical and Seasonal Impact on snoring prevalence - A study based on Internet search frequencies
Conclusions: We could demonstrate that the frequency of Internet searches for snoring has a significant seasonal pattern. This might reflect the direct contact of the bedpartner with this sleep disturbance. Both maximum search frequency and explanatory factors are influenced by the geographical location. Further research in this topic is warranted.

Successful elimination of hemodialysis-related bacteremia and vascular access infection.
Abstract Hemodialysis (HD) related bacteremia and dialysis induced infection constitute major risk factors for mortality and morbidity among patients with end stage renal disease. In this retrospective study, we attempted to assess the impact of the infection control protocol introduced in our center on the prevalence of HD related bacteremia and vascular access infection. All the HD sessions performed over 8 years, from January 2004 till the end of December 2011, were included in this study. Over 108 months of the study period, 6161 HD sessions were performed on 118 patients. Demographic data of all the study pat...

Cultural differences in attention: Eye movement evidence from a comparative visual search task.
Abstract Individual differences in visual attention have been linked to thinking style: analytic thinking (common in individualistic cultures) is thought to promote attention to detail and focus on the most important part of a scene, whereas holistic thinking (common in collectivist cultures) promotes attention to the global structure of a scene and the relationship between its parts. However, this theory is primarily based on relatively simple judgement tasks. We compared groups from Great Britain (an individualist culture) and Saudi Arabia (a collectivist culture) on a more complex comparative visual search task...

Development of an Eastern Mediterranean Region search strategy for biomedical citations indexed in PubMed.
Authors: Tadmouri GO, Mandil A, Rashidian A Abstract PubMed, a 'barrier-free' bibliographic database covering biomedical and health disciplines, has been successfully used to identify a multitude of indicators that assist in analyzing global trends for biomedical research productivity. The current study represents an original attempt to develop and optimize an Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) search strategy in PubMed to pave the way for subsequent descriptive analyses. The refined EMR search strategy contains elaborate syntaxes which facilitate controlling the search process and maintaining a proper balance betw...

Vascular endothelial growth factor and soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 in patients with end-stage renal disease. Associations with laboratory findings, comorbidities, and medications.
CONCLUSION: Our study is the first showing the significance of sVEGFR-1 in ESRD patients, and associations with comorbidities, medications. Especially our finding of rhEPO and VEGF may illuminate a reasonable positive effect of rhEPO on angiogenesis. Soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 and VEGF may be important markers in the pathophysiology of ESRD. PMID: 29915853 [PubMed - in process]

Genetic Effects of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGF-A) and Its Association with Disease Progression in Breast Cancer Population of Saudi Arabia.
CONCLUSION: VEGF (-460T>C) TT genotype significantly increased the risk of breast cancer. VEGF-A (-460T>C) genetic ariability was significantly associated with distant metastasis of the disease. It may be a useful as predisposing genetic marker for breast cancer .Further studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to confirm our findings.<br />. PMID: 31983176 [PubMed - in process]

Closed incision negative pressure therapy to reduce groin wound infections in vascular surgery: A randomised controlled trial
ConclusionWhile the experiences with the ciNPT device were encouraging, the study fails to provide evidence of the efficacy of the device to reduce groin wound infections after vascular surgery. It illustrates far more that larger multicentre studies are required and seem promising to provide further evidence for the use of ciNPT.

Pulmonary hypertension - prevalence, risk factors, and its association with vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis patients.
Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) is a recently recognized complication in dialysis and it is associated with a poor outcome. We estimated the prevalence of PHTN and its association with vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. One hundred and thirteen adult CKD patients were included in this study, of which 56 (49.6%) were on conservative treatment (nondialysis group) and 57 (50.4%) were on maintenance HD (dialysis group). Demographic, clinical, and biochemical parameters were collected and compared between the groups. Thirty-nine (69.6%) and 33 (57.8%) males wer...
