Status quo of pain ‐related patient‐reported outcomes and perioperative pain management in 10,415 patients from 10 countries: Analysis of registry data
ConclusionsThis comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that many patients in this international cohort reported poor pain-related PROs on the first postoperative day. PROs and treatments varied greatly. Most of the variance of the PROs could not be explained. The findings served as a basis for devising and implementing QI programmes in participating hospitals.SignificanceIn preparation for quality improvement projects, we comprehensively evaluated pain-related patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and treatment practices of 10,415 adult patients spanning 10 countries. PROs were generally poor. Demographics, country and surgical ...

Patient Satisfaction with Spanish Pain Centers: Observational Study with More than 3,000 Patients.
Authors: García García JA, Hernández-Puiggròs P, Tesedo Nieto J, Acín Lázaro MP, Carrera González A, Soler MJ, Maldonado Vega S Abstract Chronic pain is a serious problem in Spain. This multicenter, epidemiological 3-month follow-up study investigates pain management efficacy in Spanish centers using patient satisfaction criteria. 3,414 eligible adult patients (65,6% female) with moderate to severe chronic pain from 146 pain centers were included. Patient satisfaction was assessed based onto question 18 of Spanish healthcare barometer-CSI. Pain evolution (Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF) and visual a...

Which Seems to Be Worst? Pain Severity and Quality of Life between Patients with Lateral Hip Pain and Low Back Pain.
Conclusions: Patients who suffered from CLBP showed greater pain severity and HRQoL discomfort with regard to patients with GTPS. Despite greater scores for CLBP, the PRS did not seem to be different between both conditions. PMID: 30425756 [PubMed - in process]

Psychotherapy for Physical Pain in Patients with Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review.
Conclusions: Evidence on the effect of psychotherapy on physical pain in patients with FS was divergent; though most studies report a reduction in pain, this was not always lasting and/or significant. Diversity of the results might be due to the selected psychotherapeutic approaches, assessment tools, and other internal (e.g., personality traits, (sub)clinical psychiatric symptoms, and treatment adherence) and external (e.g., family environment and social support) variables worth to be considered in the future research. Prevalence and Characterization of Breakthrough Pain Associated with Chronic Low Back Pain in the South of Spain: A Cross-Sectional, Multicenter, Observational Study.
The objectives of this study were, first, the evaluation of the prevalence of BTP in patients with CLBP in the South of Spain (N = 1,868) and, second, the characterization of BTP in these patients (N = 295). Data was collected on presence of BTP, type and location of pain, treatment, compliance, and patient satisfaction. We found a prevalence of BTP in patients with CLBP of 37.5% (95% CI: 35.3%-39.7%), similar in men and women. 75% of the patients were older than 50 years. The preferred drug of patients who control BTP with opioids is fentanyl (78.3%) and its most common form of administration is nasal (53.2%). Therapeutic...

Evaluation of Quality of Life and Satisfaction of Patients with Neuropathic Pain and Breakthrough Pain: Economic Impact Based on Quality of Life.
Conclusions: Occurrence of BTP in patients with CNP causes a substantial increase in healthcare costs which is significantly greater in older males. PMID: 30254760 [PubMed]

Gender Differences in Symptoms, Health-Related Quality of Life, Sleep Quality, Mental Health, Cognitive Performance, Pain-Cognition, and Positive Health in Spanish Fibromyalgia Individuals: The Al- Ándalus Project.
Conclusion. The results of the present study do not support consistent evidence of gender differences in fibromyalgia-related symptoms. However, it seems that detriment of some symptoms (especially pain) in fibromyalgia men compared with their nonfibromyalgia counterparts is greater than those of fibromyalgia women compared with their nonfibromyalgia peers. Acupuncture in Temporomandibular Disorder Myofascial Pain Treatment: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSION: Despite the weak scientific evidence supporting its efficacy, acupuncture treatment appears to relieve the signs and symptoms of pain in myofascial TMD. More controlled and randomized clinical trials with larger sample sizes are needed in this field of research to verify these initial findings. PMID: 28738107 [PubMed - in process]

Postoperative pain management in Spanish hospitals. A cohort study using the PAIN-OUT registry
Pain after surgery remains a problem worldwide, though there is no published data on postoperative outcomes in Spain. We evaluated 2922 patients in the first day after surgery in thirteen tertiary care Spanish Hospitals, using the PAIN-OUT questionnaire. Aims were to: assess postoperative outcomes, and anesthetic/analgesic management in orthopedics (ORT) and general (GEN) surgery patients; explore the influence of the analgesic therapy on outcomes and opioid requirements; evaluate and compare outcomes and analgesic management by surgical procedure.

Mixed Pain Can Be Discerned in the Primary Care and Orthopedics Settings in Spain: A Large Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusions: Patients with mixed pain showed more clinical complexity than patients with other types of pain. The consideration of mixed pain as an independent pathophysiological category may be justifiable on empirical clinical grounds.

Pancreatic Cancer Related Pain: Review of Pathophysiology and Intrathecal Drug Delivery Systems for Pain Management
CONCLUSION: This review analyzes both past and current literature with a critical analysis of findings and respective recommendations. Most studies of IDDS in PCRP evaluate outcomes on pain using one-dimensional pain scales, such as VAS. Other relevant results, such as performance status or quality of life, are not frequently reported. Burden of disease variables, such as cancer stage, location, and comorbidities, like depression and systemic analgesia co-prescription, are usually not presented in these studies. In the same way, most studies do not precisely inform IDDS titration and IT medication. These factors make integ...

The Prevalence of Chronic Pain in the Adult Population in Israel: An Internet-Based Survey
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first internet survey conducted in Israel to estimate the incidence of CP, and the high CP prevalence documented is in agreement with previous reports from Europe and the USA. It also reaffirms the widespread existence of multifocal or widespread pain in clinical chronic pain and the correlation between pain intensity, impact on patients' quality of life and disability, and pain intractability. These data reaffirm the similarly major health burden CP presents across different countries and cultures.PMID:36247105 | PMC:PMC9553676 | DOI:10.1155/2022/3903720
