Exploring advanced methods for network meta-analysis
High-quality systematic reviews (SRs) of both new and existing health technologies are vital to inform clinical practices and healthcare decision-making. This has been recognised by global entities such as the World Health Organization and national healthcare policy agencies like the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the United Kingdom, and the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia. These SRs serve as the foundation for evidence-based practices and policies, which is reflected in the increasing number of publications in recent ...

Multi-Cancer Early Detection: The New Frontier in Cancer Early Detection
Annu Rev Med. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1146/annurev-med-050522-033624. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe new generation of cancer early detection tests holds remarkable promise for revolutionizing and changing the paradigm of cancer early detection. Dozens of cancer early detection tests are being developed and evaluated. Some are already commercialized and available for use, most as a complement to and not in place of existing recommended cancer screening tests. This review evaluates existing single- and multi-cancer early detection tests (MCEDs), discussing their performance characteristics including sensitivity, specificity...

Stewart Cameron obituary
Leading British nephrologist who founded an internationally renowned kidney unit at Guy ’s hospital in LondonAs a bright young doctor at Guy ’s hospital in London in the 1960s, Stewart Cameron, who has died aged 89, was determined to be both clinician and researcher, but where should he focus his talents? Irreversible kidney failure – uniformly fatal until then – was just becoming treatable through dialysis or kidney transplantatio n; both were complex, demanding and dangerous, for patients and doctors alike.Stewart had found his metier and decided to make renal medicine his life ’s work. The comparison of total energy and protein intake relative to estimated requirements in chronic spinal cord injury
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 20:1-30. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002088. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals experience dietary inadequacies complicated by an understudied research area. Our objectives were to assess (1) the agreement between methods of estimating energy requirement (EER) and estimated energy intake (EEI) and (2) whether dietary protein intake met SCI-specific protein guidelines. Persons with chronic SCI (n=43) completed 3-day food records to assess EEI and dietary protein intake. EER was determined with the Long and Institute of Medicine (IOM) methods and the SCI-specific Fa...

Some Politicians Want to Research Geoengineering as a Climate Solution. Scientists Are Worried
Stratospheric aerosol injection, the idea of spraying sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere to cool the planet, is one of the most controversial topics in climate science, with scientists engaged in a fierce, yearslong debate over whether even researching such techniques poses unacceptable risks. To some people outside of that community, though, it no longer matters much what the academics think. “Can we just disagree and move on?” Andrew Song, the co-founder of controversial geoengineering startup Make Sunsets, said in February, as he and his business partner Luke Iseman drove to the Reno, Nev., site of the...
