Hearts, knees and reducing disease through exercise - what is happening this year in the world of sport and exercise medicine in Australasia?
Nau mai haere mai to the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) edition of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM). A recent highlight for the ACSEP has been our annual scientific meeting which took place in Adelaide, Australia. The main theme was the ‘changing climate’ of sport and exercise medicine (SEM). During the meeting, there were multiple sessions that reflected on the impact of our specialty on climate change and the environment. One presentation highlighted the significant volume of CO2 emissions that were associated with high tech imaging. Another was a very interesting p...

Implementing the 27 PRISMA 2020 Statement items for systematic reviews in the sport and exercise medicine, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and sports science fields: the PERSiST (implementing Prisma in Exercise, Rehabilitation, Sport medicine and SporTs science) guidance
Br J Sports Med. 2021 Oct 8:bjsports-2021-103987. doi: 10.1136/bjsports-2021-103987. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoor reporting of medical and healthcare systematic reviews is a problem from which the sports and exercise medicine, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and sports science fields are not immune. Transparent, accurate and comprehensive systematic review reporting helps researchers replicate methods, readers understand what was done and why, and clinicians and policy-makers implement results in practice. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement and its accompanying E...

Welcome back to your academic home: AMSSM special issue
As with many life events marked in relation to March 2020 when COVID-19 became a global pandemic, the publication of this year’s American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) special issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine corresponds with the 2-year mark of this pandemic. During that time, AMSSM members (similar to our colleagues around the world) have learnt to navigate the ever-changing challenges of practising medicine, caring for sports teams, conducting research, advocating for healthy communities, and educating the next generation of sports and exercise medicine physicians during a pandemic. Wit...

PFD-SENTINEL: Development of a screening tool for pelvic floor dysfunction in female athletes through an international Delphi consensus
To develop a screening tool for pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) in female athletes for use by sports medicine clinicians (eg, musculoskeletal/sports physiotherapists, sports and exercise medicine physicians), which guides referral to a PFD specialist (eg, pelvic floor/women’s health physiotherapist, gynaecologist, urogynaecologist, urologist). Between February and April 2022, an international two-round modified Delphi study was conducted to assess expert opinion on which symptoms, risk factors and clinical and sports-related characteristics (items) should be included in a screening tool. We defined consensus a priori ...

A systematic review of prospective epidemiological research into injury and illness in Olympic combat sport.
CONCLUSIONS: There is currently a lack of consensus in the collection of injury/illness data, limiting the development of prevention programmes for combat sport as a whole. However, sport-specific data that identify body areas with high injury frequency can provide direction to clinicians, enabling them to focus their attention on developing pathologies in these areas. In doing so, clinicians can enhance the practical elements of their role within the integrated combat sport performance team and assist in the regular update of surveillance records. Under-representation of female athletes in research informing influential concussion consensus and position statements: an evidence review and synthesis
CONCLUSION: Female athletes are significantly under-represented in the studies guiding clinical care for sport-related concussion for a broad array of sports and exercise medicine clinicians. We recommend intentional recruitment and funding of gender diverse participants in concussion studies, suggest authorship teams reflect diverse perspectives, and encourage consensus statements note when cited data under-represent non-male athletes.PMID:35851519 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2021-105045
