Advances in combined application of dental stem cells and small-molecule drugs in regenerative medicine
AbstractTeeth are a kind of masticatory organs of special histological origin, unique to vertebrates, playing an important role in chewing, esthetics, and auxiliary pronunciation. In the past decades, with the development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the studies of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) gradually attracted the interest of researchers. Accordingly, several types of MSCs have been successively isolated in teeth or teeth-related tissues, including dental pulp stem cells, periodontal ligament stem cells, stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth, dental follicle stem cells, stem cells from ap...

Ten-Year Legacy Effects of Three Eight-Month Exercise Training Programs on Cardiometabolic Health Parameters
In conclusion, as both the individual and public health implications are substantial, conducting more studies designed to specifically test for the possible health and/or fitness legacy effects of a single prolonged exercise training program is imperative. Ethics Statement This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the Duke University Institutional Review Board with written informed consent from all subjects. All subjects gave written informed consent in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. The protocol was approved by the Duke University Institutional Review Board. Author Contributions...

One Bout of Resistance Training Does Not Enhance Metformin Actions in Prediabetic and Diabetic Individuals
This study aimed to determine the separated and combined effects of metformin and resistance exercise on glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in overweight/obese individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods Fourteen adults with a body mass index of 32.1 ± 4.1 kg·m−2, insulin resistance (HOMA-2 1.6 ± 0.6), and poor glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin, 6.9% ± 0.9%; 51.9 ± 10.7 mmol·mol−1) while taking metformin (1561 ± 470 g·d−1) were recruited. Participants underwent four 72-h long experimental trials in a randomized counterbalanced orde...

Leading Drug For Type 2 Diabetes May Hold Key To Longer Living
BOSTON (CBS) — Metformin is a pill used by millions of Americans with type 2 diabetes to control high blood sugar.  It is also sometimes used in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility. Now researchers are looking at metformin as a possible anti-aging drug.  That’s because studies have shown that the drug may improve the health and lifespan of certain types of worms and mice. The FDA has given the green light for researchers to conduct the first clinical trials in humans with 3,000 older adults to see if the drug can slow the progression of certain age-related conditions and even improve surviv...

Hybrid drug combination: Combination of ferulic acid and metformin as anti-diabetic therapy
Conclusion The synergistic interaction of ferulic acid and metformin is due their action on parallel pathways which are involved in glucose uptake. Due to synergistic nature of their interaction, it possible to reduce the dose of metformin (by combining with ferulic acid) required to achieve normoglycemia. Since the dose of metformin is reduced, the dose associated side effects of metformin therapy can be reduced. Graphical abstract

Daily Aspirin No Longer Recommended To Prevent Heart Attacks In Older Adults
(CNN) — If you’re a healthy older adult looking for ways to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, don’t turn to that age-old standby: daily low-dose aspirin. It’s no longer recommended as a preventative for older adults who don’t have a high risk or existing heart disease, according to guidelines announced Sunday by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. “For the most part, we are now much better at treating risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and especially high cholesterol,” said North Carolina cardiologist Dr. Kevin Campbell, who wa...
