The availability of six tracer medicines in private medicine outlets in Uganda
Conclusions The regulatory process should be improved through the enforcement of outlet licensing and medicine registration. Additional studies to elucidate the reasons behind the use of private medicine outlets over the public sector would assist the government in implementing interventions to increase use of public sector medicine outlets.

Prevalence of patients treated with anti-diabetic medicine in Greenland and Denmark. A cross-sectional register study.
In conclusion, this study showed a lower prevalence of patients treated with anti-diabetic medicine in Greenland than Denmark. The main reason may be a much higher prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes in Greenland, particularly among the middle-aged. Differences in awareness of diabetes and access to continued primary healthcare may be contributing factors. PMID: 30477406 [PubMed - in process]

Why Food Could Be the Best Medicine of All
When Tom Shicowich’s toe started feeling numb in 2010, he brushed it off as a temporary ache. At the time, he didn’t have health insurance, so he put off going to the doctor. The toe became infected, and he got so sick that he stayed in bed for two days with what he assumed was the flu. When he finally saw a doctor, the physician immediately sent Shicowich to the emergency room. Several days later, surgeons amputated his toe, and he ended up spending a month in the hospital to recover. Shicowich lost his toe because of complications of Type 2 diabetes as he struggled to keep his blood sugar under control. He wa...

Network Medicine: A Clinical Approach for Precision Medicine and Personalized Therapy in Coronary Heart Disease.
Authors: Infante T, Viscovo LD, Rimini ML, Padula S, Caso P, Napoli C Abstract Early identification of coronary atherosclerotic pathogenic mechanisms is useful for predicting the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and future cardiac events. Epigenome changes may clarify a significant fraction of this "missing hereditability", thus offering novel potential biomarkers for prevention and care of CHD. The rapidly growing disciplines of systems biology and network science are now poised to meet the fields of precision medicine and personalized therapy. Network medicine integrates standard clinical recording and non-in...

Chinese herbal products and the reduction of risk of breast cancer among females with type 2 diabetes in Taiwan: A case–control study
The objective of the case–control study is to estimate the effect on the risk of breast cancer of using traditional Chinese medicine for women with type 2 diabetes. More than 80% of women with type 2 diabetes have used traditional Chinese medicine. The most commonly prescribed drug was metformin and the herbal formulas were the Di Huang Wan series, including Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, Qi Ju Di Huang Wan, and Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan, followed by Bai Hu Jia Ren Shen Tang and Yu Quan Wan. For the effect of metformin, women who used traditional Chinese medicine including Di Huang series have a lower risk of breast cancer HR: 0.35 (...

Medicine-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Findings from Spontaneous Reporting Systems, Sequence Symmetry Analysis and a Case –Control Study with a Focus on Medicines Used in Primary Care
ConclusionThis research highlights a number of medicines that may contribute to acute injury; however, we had an insufficient sample to confirm associations of some medicines. Spironolactone, furosemide, and trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole are medicines that, in particular, need to be used carefully and monitored closely in patients in the community at risk of acute kidney injury.

Analysis of Drugs Illegally Added into Chinese Traditional Patent Medicine Using Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering.
In this report, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis method for five kinds of illegally added drugs (rosiglitazone maleate, phenformin hydrochloride, metformin hydrochloride, pioglitazone hydrochloride and sibutramine hydrochloride) in Chinese traditional patent medicine (CTPM) has been demonstrated, including simultaneous detections of drug mixtures with CTPM. Silver colloidal, prepared by a sodium citrate reaction, was used as a SERS substrate. The optimum pH condition for each drug has also been explored because of its combined effect on protonation, surface charge, repulsion of an analyte and nanoparticl...

Regenerative Medicine for Diabetes: Differentiation of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells into Functional β-Cells In Vitro and Their Proposed Journey to Clinical Translation.
Abstract Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases, rising globally at an alarming rate. Type 1 (juvenile diabetes) is the autoimmune version of diabetes where the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, whereas Type 2 (adult onset diabetes) is caused due to insulin resistance of the cells. In either of the cases, elevated blood glucose levels are observed which leads to progressive comorbidity like renal failure, cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, etc. Metformin, sulphonyl urea group of drugs, as well as insulin injections are the available therapies. In advanced cases of diabetes, the drug alone or drug in comb...

Metformin Does Not Induce Hyperlactatemia in Patients Admitted to Internal Medicine Ward.
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic metformin treatment mildly increases lactate level, but does not induce hyperlactatemia or lactic acidosis in acute illness on the first day of admission to an internal medicine ward. These data support the expansion of metformin use. PMID: 28513118 [PubMed - in process]

Transcription Factor NRF2 as a Therapeutic Target for Chronic Diseases: A Systems Medicine Approach.
Abstract Systems medicine has a mechanism-based rather than a symptom- or organ-based approach to disease and identifies therapeutic targets in a nonhypothesis-driven manner. In this work, we apply this to transcription factor nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (NRF2) by cross-validating its position in a protein-protein interaction network (the NRF2 interactome) functionally linked to cytoprotection in low-grade stress, chronic inflammation, metabolic alterations, and reactive oxygen species formation. Multiscale network analysis of these molecular profiles suggests alterations of NRF2 expression and act...

Diabetes Treatment in the Elderly: Incorporating Geriatrics, Technology, and Functional Medicine
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe current approach to diabetes in the elderly incorporates components from the comprehensive geriatric approach. The most updated guidelines from the American Diabetes Association reflect influence from the consensus made in 2012 with the American Geriatrics Society. Notably, the framework included the evaluation for geriatric syndromes (falls and urinary incontinence), functional and cognitive abilities. The goal for this review is to provide an updated summary of treatment strategies for community-dwelling older adults. We identified the need to expand our approach by addressing innovative appr...

Integrative approach to uncover antioxidant properties of Bupleuri Radix and its active compounds: Multiscale interactome-level analysis with experimental validation
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Feb 23:S0891-5849(23)00081-3. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.02.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute and chronic liver disease are global problems with high morbidity and mortality. Bupleuri Radix (BR) is an herbal medicine that has been prescribed empirically in traditional Asian medicine to modulate liver metabolism. However, its active compounds and therapeutic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we integrated a network-based approach and experimental validation to elucidate BR's therapeutic potential in treating oxidative liver injury. Our approach incorporated data collection and network ...
