A suggested protocol for value assignment using isotope-dilution-LC-MS/MS in reference measurement procedures - exemplary application for ciprofloxacin in serum
CONCLUSION: A standardized, detailed procedure for the application of isotope dilution LC-MS/MS in reference measurement procedures can complement the ISO 15193 standard with respect to this particular analytical technique, which is now widely used in the context of metrological traceability in laboratory medicine.PMID:37709112 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117556

Antimicrobial Potential of Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil on Bacterial Isolates
This study investigates the in vitro antibacterial activity of coconut oil on selected clinical and pure bacterial isolates. Clinical samples were isolated from the people of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. Biochemical examination of the microorganisms was done according to standard methods. Pure bacterial cultures were provided from LTA srl Italia. In this research work, an effort has been made to highlight the valuable properties of Cocos nucifera oil, in order to rationalize the use of coconut oil against bacteria. Experiments were performed by agar well diffusion method. Ciprofloxacin was used as a standard antib...

What are Common Pitfalls in Measuring the QTc in Hospitalized Adult Patients?
Case Ms. S. is a 60-year-old woman admitted with gastroenteritis and hypovolemia in the setting of three days of nausea and diarrhea. She was also found to have atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. Her tachycardia improved after intravenous fluids. The following morning, nausea prompted her nurse to request antiemetic medications. You inspect the admission electrocardiogram (ECG) (Figure 1). Are QT-prolonging antiemetics safe to administer? In this review, we provide background and practical guidance regarding QT interval (QTc) interpretation for the internist caring for hospitalized adults.  Accurate meas...

Paediatric medicine issues and gaps from healthcare workers point of view: survey results and a narrative review from the global accelerator for paediatric formulations project
The WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc) has not been systematically revised in the last few years. We conducted a survey addressed to healthcare professionals prescribing, preparing, or administering medicines to children and a narrative review to identify problematic paediatric formulations or missing medicines in all therapeutic fields to inform the review of the EMLc in 2023. A total of 285 physicians (63%), 28 nurses (6%) and 142 pharmacists (31%), mostly working in the hospital setting, reported at least one problematic medicine. 290 medicines were reported as missing (completely or the child-app...

Experimentally exposed toxic effects of long-term exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of CIP in males and females of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term exposure to environmental CIP concentrations (1, 10, and 100 μg.L-1) in males and females of Rhamdia quelen. After 28 days of exposure, we collected the blood for the analysis of hematological and genotoxic biomarkers. Additionally, we measured 17 β-estradiol and 11 keto-testosterone levels. After the euthanasia, we collected the brain and the hypothalamus to analyze acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and neurotransmitters, respectively. The liver and gonads were assessed for biochemical, genotoxic, and histopathological biomarkers. At 100 μg.L-1 CIP, we observed g...
