The combination of ciprofloxacin and indomethacin suppresses the level of inflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages in  vitro
CONCLUSION: The combination of ciprofloxacin and indomethacin suppressed the levels of inflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages in vitro. This study illustrates the regulatory mechanism of drug combinations on innate immune cells that cause inflammatory reactions. In addition, it provides a new potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment pattern to prevent and cure various complications in the future.PMID:35697590 | DOI:10.1016/j.cjtee.2022.05.002

What Are the Symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome?
Discussion Serotonin syndrome (SS) is a clinical diagnosis and problem which can be seen in patients of all ages. Classically SS presents with changing mental status, autonomic dysfunction and neuromuscular excitability. It is caused by increased serotonin levels because of therapeutically increasing the dose of a medication already being taken, adding an additional serotoninergic medication or one that potentiates serotonin, overlapping transition when changing medications, or intentional or unintentional overdose. It has become more common especially as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been used more ...

A suggested protocol for value assignment using isotope-dilution-LC-MS/MS in reference measurement procedures - exemplary application for ciprofloxacin in serum
CONCLUSION: A standardized, detailed procedure for the application of isotope dilution LC-MS/MS in reference measurement procedures can complement the ISO 15193 standard with respect to this particular analytical technique, which is now widely used in the context of metrological traceability in laboratory medicine.PMID:37709112 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117556

Acute histoplasmosis in three Mexican sewer workers
We report the detection of high-titre anti-Histoplasma capsulatum IgM in the serum of three young adult males occupationally exposed to bat guano. Multidrug treatment with trimethoprim– sulfamethoxazole was started, followed by ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, metamizole sodium, rifampicin/isoniazid/pyrazinamide, moxifloxacin and lastly amphotericin B and ceftriaxone. Despite treatment the condition of one patient deteriorated, and he died 23 days after exposure. The other two patients recovered after receiving similar therapy with the addition of voriconazole. They are currently being treated with itraconazole for a 1-year period.

Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Gastroenteritis at a Diarrheal Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1996-2011.
Abstract Data on non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection in South Asia are limited. We used data gathered prospectively from 1996 to 2011 as part of a hospital surveillance system in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to identify diarrheal patients with NTS isolated from stool. NTS was isolated in 1.3% (468 of 37,439) of diarrheal patients; 47% of total cases of NTS were in children < 5 years of age, although older adults (≥ 60 years) had the highest isolation rates. NTS isolation peaked in the monsoon months of July and August. Over the study period, rates of multidrug resistance decreased, whereas rates of decreased susce...

Photolytic degradation of norfloxacin, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in various aqueous media.
Abstract The photolytic degradation of norfloxacin, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, fluoroquinolone antibacterials widely used in human and veterinary medicine, was investigated under simulated solar irradiation in different water matrices (river water and synthetic wastewater similar by composition to wastewater of pharmaceutical industry). The results showed that investigated fluoroquinolones degrade very quickly and photodegradation followed pseudo first order kinetics. The slowest photodegradation rate was observed in river water for all three fluoroquinolones. In the case of pharmaceutical mixture irradiation...

Important treatment change for Neisseria gonorrhoea
Readers will be interested in the recent changes to British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) recommendations for the treatment of gonorrhoea. Neisseria gonorrhoea has had a longstanding propensity to become resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Initially the organism was fully sensitive to penicillin however after developing resistance to this ciprofloxacin was used as first-line treatment. More recently, with further accumulating antibiotic resistance, a single oral dose of 3rd generation cephalosporin cefixime has been used as treatment. In 2009 surveillance data from England and Wales showed extensi...

Human Infection with Shewanella putrefaciens and S. algae: Report of 16 Cases in Martinique and Review of the Literature.
This article reports 16 cases of Shewanella spp. infections in Martinique since 1997 and reviews another 239 cases reported in the literature since 1973. Patients experienced soft tissue infections, ear infection, or abdominal and biliary tract infections. A skin or mucosal portal of entry was found for 53% of the patients and exposure to the marine environment was reported for 44%; 79% of patients had an underlying condition. Bacteriema were frequent (28%). Most (87%) patients recovered, although ear infections can become chronic. Death occurred in 13% of the patients. Most Shewanella spp. isolates are susceptible to cefo...

Travel‐Related Chronic Hemorrhagic Leg Ulcer Infection by Shewanella algae
Shewanella algae is an emerging seawater‐associated bacterium. In immunocompromised patients, infections may result in bacteremia, osteomyelitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Our patient, suffering from autoimmune vasculitis and myasthenia gravis, developed typical hemorrhagic bullae and leg ulcers because of S algae. She was treated efficiently with a combination of ciprofloxacin and piperacillin.

Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Campylobacter spp. in Retail Chicken, Western Canada.
Abstract During 2005-2010, the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance identified increased prevalence of ciprofloxacin (a fluororquinolone) resistance among Campylobacter isolates from retail chicken in British Columbia (4%-17%) and Saskatchewan (6%-11%), Canada. Fluoroquinolones are critically important to human medicine and are not labeled for use in poultry in Canada. PMID: 23764141 [PubMed - in process]

Virulence and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from rooks.
Abstract With regard to antibiotic resistance studies in various model animals in the urban environment, the presented study focused on the rook, many behavioural and ecological aspects of which are important from an epidemiological point of view. A total of 130 Escherichia coli strains isolated from rook faeces during a two-year period (2011-2012) were investigated for antibiotic resistance and virulence. Resistance to ampicillin (60%) and streptomycin (40%) were the most frequent, followed by resistance to fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin-22% and enrofloxacin-24%), tetracycline (18%), cotrimoxazol (17%) and florf...

Malakoplakia in a healthy young female patient.
Abstract Malakoplakia is a rare granulomatous disease that occurs commonly in the urinary tract and secondarily in the gastrointestinal tract. Most reported cases of malakoplakia are associated with immunosuppressive diseases or chronic prolonged illness. Here, we report a rare case of malakoplakia in a young healthy adolescent without any underlying disease. A 19-year-old female was referred to our hospital following the discovery of multiple rectal polyps with sigmoidoscopy. She had no specific past medical history but complained of recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea for 3 months. A colonoscopy revealed diver...
