Vanishing Bile Duct Syndrome with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis After Minimal Change Disease
Jaundice, dark urine, and pruritus were the symptoms of a healthy 31-year-old woman who presented to our hepatology clinic. The patient was healthy until December 2014 when she presented with generalized edema and proteinuria. Kidney biopsy showed adult-onset minimal change disease, and she was treated with prednisone for 1 month and received ciprofloxacin within this period. Proteinuria resolved, and prednisone was discontinued. She remained well until 1 month later when she presented with pruritus and dark urine.

Imaging bacteria with radiolabelled quinolones, cephalosporins and siderophores for imaging infection: a systematic review
Abstract Bacterial infections are still one of the main causes of patient morbidity and mortality worldwide. Nowadays, many imaging techniques, like computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, are used to identify inflammatory processes, but, although they recognize anatomical modifications, they cannot easily distinguish bacterial infective foci from non bacterial infections. In nuclear medicine, many efforts have been made to develop specific radiopharmaceuticals to discriminate infection from sterile inflammation. Several compounds (antimicrobial peptides, leukocytes, cytokines, antibiotics…) have been...

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic evaluations of a 10  mg/kg enrofloxacin intramuscular administration in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps): a preliminary assessment
Enrofloxacin (E) is commonly used in veterinary medicine. It is necessary to perform pharmacokinetic/dynamic studies to minimize the selection of resistant mutants of bacteria and extend the efficacy of antimicrobial agents. Eight healthy adult Pogona vitticeps were assigned into two groups of equal size and treated with a single intramuscular injection of E at 10 mg/kg. Blood samples were withdrawn at different scheduled times for each group, and rectal swabs were collected. E and ciprofloxacin (active metabolite) blood concentrations were quantified by an HPLC validated method, while the in vitro antimicrobial suscepti...

FDA Grants Orphan Drug Designation for Bayer ’ s Investigational Ciprofloxacin DPI (Dry Powder for Inhalation) for Treatment of Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis
WHIPPANY, N.J., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Bayer HealthCare today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Office of Orphan Products Development has granted orphan drug designation for its investigational Ciprofloxacin Dry Powder for Inhalation (Ciprofloxacin DPI) for the treatment of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). Patients with NCFB suffer from frequent severe acute pulmonary bacterial exacerbations which lead to further inflammation, airway and lung parenchyma damage. The Orphan Drug Designation program provides orphan status to drugs and biologics that are intended for the...

South Asia as a Reservoir for the Global Spread of Ciprofloxacin-Resistant < i > Shigella sonnei < /i > : A Cross-Sectional Study
ConclusionsThis study suggests that a single clone, which is widespread in South Asia, is likely driving the current intercontinental surge of ciprofloxacin-resistantS.sonnei and is capable of establishing endemic transmission in new locations. Despite being limited in geographical scope, our work has major implications for understanding the international transfer of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, withS.sonnei acting as a tractable model for studying how antimicrobial-resistant Gram-negative bacteria spread globally.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of lactic acid bacteria isolated from human and food-producing animal feces in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand
AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of 93Lactobacillus strains to seven antimicrobial agents, i.e., penicillin G, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, vancomycin, tetracycline, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, by disk diffusion test. TheLactobacillus strains were isolated from fecal samples taken from 90 healthy, food-producing animals (fattening pigs, free-grazing ducks, and beef cattle) and 30 healthy human subjects (1- to 6-year-olds) in Khon Kaen. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin against all strains were determined...

Enteric Fever in a Tertiary Paediatric Hospital: A Retrospective Six-Year Review.
CONCLUSION: Enteric fever is largely an imported disease in Singapore and has contributed to significant morbidity in children. The use of typhoid vaccine, as well as education on food and water hygiene to children travelling to developing countries, needs to be emphasised. PMID: 27523510 [PubMed - in process]

Photo-Fenton degradation of the pharmaceuticals ciprofloxacin and fluoxetine after anaerobic pre-treatment of hospital effluent.
Abstract This work evaluated the photo-Fenton degradation of two pharmaceuticals extensively used in human medicine, ciprofloxacin (CIP), and fluoxetine (FLU) when present in an anaerobic pre-treated hospital effluent (HE) at low concentration (100 μg L(-1)). Operational parameters such as concentration of hydrogen peroxide, iron, and initial pH as well as the effect of iron citrate complex were evaluated considering the degradation of the pharmaceuticals. Iron citrate complex (Fecit) influenced significantly FLU degradation at pH 4.5 achieving 80 % after 20 min, while with iron nitrate only 36 % degradation...

Serratia marcescens bacteraemia outbreak in haemodialysis patients with tunnelled catheters due to colonisation of antiseptic solution. Experience at 4 hospitals.
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of bacteraemia due to unconventional germs should alert us to a potential outbreak. The application of a solution contaminated by S. marcescens in haemodialysis catheters was the source of bacteraemia. The intravenous antibiotic treatment and the catheter lock solution allowed an excellent survival of patients and catheters. PMID: 27595511 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Research Articles Treatment of otitis media by transtympanic delivery of antibiotics
Otitis media is the most common reason U.S. children receive antibiotics. The requisite 7- to 10-day course of oral antibiotics can be challenging to deliver in children, entails potential systemic toxicity, and encourages selection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. We developed a drug delivery system that, when applied once to the tympanic membrane through the external auditory canal, delivers an entire course of antimicrobial therapy to the middle ear. A pentablock copolymer poloxamer 407–polybutylphosphoester (P407-PBP) was designed to flow easily during application and then to form a mechanically strong hydrog...

Antibiotic Treatment of Hospitalized Patients with Pneumonia Complicated by Clostridium Difficile Infection.
Authors: Zycinska K, Chmielewska M, Lenartowicz B, Hadzik-Blaszczyk M, Cieplak M, Kur Z, Krupa R, Wardyn KA Abstract Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is one of the most common gastrointestinal complication after antimicrobial treatment. It is estimated that CDI after pneumonia treatment is connected with a higher mortality than other causes of hospitalization. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the kind of antibiotic used for pneumonia treatment and mortality from post-pneumonia CDI. We addressed the issue by examining retrospectively the records of 217 patients who met the diagnostic ...
