A comparison study of metformin only therapy and metformin combined with Chinese medicine jianyutangkang therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes: A randomized placebo-controlled double-blind study.
Abstract The aim of this 26-week, double-blind, controlled clinical trial, was to compare the efficacy of monotherapy (metformin only) with combination therapy (Chinese medicine prescription JianYuTangKang [JYTK] plus metformin) on type 2 diabetes. All patients on metformin were randomized to receive authenticated JYTK (59 patients) or placebo JYTK (53 patients), 4.5g daily, for 26 weeks. Patients also received information regarding diet and exercise. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) level, and a lipid profile were measured before, during, and after the treatment. The results of the...

Semi-individualised Chinese medicine treatment as an adjuvant management for diabetic nephropathy: a pilot add-on, randomised, controlled, multicentre, open-label pragmatic clinical trial
Introduction Diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy (DN) are prevalent and costly to manage. DN is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease. Conventional therapy blocking the renin–angiotensin system has only achieved limited effect in preserving renal function. Recent observational data show that the use of Chinese medicine (CM), a major form of traditional medicine used extensively in Asia, could reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease. However, existing clinical practice guidelines are weakly evidence-based and the effect of CM remains unclear. This trial explores the effect of an existing integrative...

Advances in Research on the Protective Mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Islet β Cells.
Authors: Li N, Zhang H, Li X Abstract The dysfunction and decreased number of islet β cells are central to the main pathogenesis of diabetes. Improving islet β cell function and increasing the number of β cells are effective approaches to treat diabetes and constitute the main direction of diabetes drug development. The role of Chinese medicine in the treatment of diabetes began to be recognized. In recent years, Chinese medicine monomers have been found to increase insulin synthesis and secretion, reduce β cell-apoptosis, and protect the function of β cells. The results of in vivo animal experiments and in vi...

Network Pharmacology Analysis of Traditional Chinese Medicine Formula Xiao Ke Yin Shui Treating Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Authors: Zhou J, Wang Q, Xiang Z, Tong Q, Pan J, Wan L, Chen J Abstract Xiao Ke Yin Shui (XKYS) formula is a traditional Chinese medicine formula treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). XKYS formula consists of four herbs, i.e., Coptidis rhizoma, Liriopes radix, bitter melon, and Cassiae semen. Herein, the chemical profiles of four herb extracts were investigated, and further analysis of the underlying mechanism of XKYS formula treating T2DM was performed using network pharmacology. The main components were selected for our network-based research. Targets of XKYS formula were mainly collected from two databases, ...

Chinese herbal medicine on treating obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction: Known as an endocrine disorder, Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has posed an influence on 6% to 20% reproductive females worldwide. The commonly used pharmaceutical agents currently are Oral Contraceptives (OCs) and insulin-sensitizing agents. However, OCs is not appropriate for females pursuing pregnancy. Furthermore, some of insulin-sensitizing agents are found to be related to a high incidence of gastrointestinal adverse effects. In this regard, the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine in handling reproductive and metabolic defects simultaneously has been proved by extensive evidence. In this rese...

Maternal Administration of the Herbal Medicine Toki-Shakuyaku-San Promotes Fetal Growth and Placental Gene Expression in Normal Mice.
Abstract Toki-shakuyaku-san (TSS), an herbal formula based on traditional Chinese medicine, is commonly used in obstetrics. To examine the effects of TSS on the normal mouse fetus and placenta, TSS was administered to normal pregnant mice and their placentas and fetuses were studied. First, the effects of maternal TSS treatment on implantation were investigated. Administration of TSS from gestation day 0.5 (G0.5) to G6.5 showed that litter size was not altered at embryonic day 11.5 (E11.5), but the number of resorbed fetuses was slightly decreased. Then, to investigate effects on fetal and placental growths after ...

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Obesity: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Multicenter, Prospective Trial.
Abstract Obesity is a serious medical problem worldwide. As a holistic therapy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may have a potential in obesity management. In this controlled trial, we evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Xin-Ju-Xiao-Gao-Fang (XJXGF), a TCM herbal formulation, in 140 obese subjects over a 24-week period. The XJXGF formula mainly consists of rhubarb, coptis, semen cassia, and citrus aurantium. Subjects with body mass index (BMI) 28-40 kg/m(2) were recruited at 5 centers in China. We assessed the changes in subjects' body weight, its related parameters, and the reduction of insulin resistanc...

Herbal medicine for the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and associated oligo/amenorrhoea and hyperandrogenism; a review of the laboratory evidence for effects with corroborative clinical findings
Conclusions: Preclinical and clinical studies provide evidence that six herbal medicines may have beneficial effects for women with oligo/amenorrhea, hyperandrogenism and PCOS. However the quantity of pre-clinical data was limited, and the quality of clinical evidence was variable. Further pre-clinical studies are needed to explain the effects of herbal medicines not included in this review with current clinical evidence but an absence of pre-clinical data.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Fuzheng Kang-Ai Decoction Inhibited Lung Cancer Cell Growth through AMPKα-Mediated Induction and Interplay of IGFBP1 and FOXO3a.
Authors: Zheng F, Wu J, Li X, Tang Q, Yang L, Yang X, Wu W, Hann SS Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the actions of Chinese herbal medicine, called "Fuzheng Kang-Ai" (FZKA for short) decoction, against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. We showed that the effect of FZKA decoction significantly inhibited growth of A549 and PC9 cells. Furthermore, FZKA increased phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase alpha (AMPKα) and induced protein expression of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding protein 1 (IGFBP1) and forkhead homeobox type O3a (FOXO3a). The ...
