Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapy and the Risk of Vascular Complications in Patients With Type II Diabetes Mellitus: A Nationwide, Retrospective, Taiwanese-Registry, Cohort Study
This study investigated whether the concurrent TCM treatment reduces the risk of vascular complications in T2DM patients by using a large population from National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). We identified 33,457 adult patients with newly diagnosed T2DM using anti-diabetic agents from a random sample of one million beneficiaries in the NHIRD between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2011. We recruited 1049 TCM users (received TCM over 30 days with a diagnosis of T2DM) and randomly selected 4092 controls as the non-TCM cohort at a ratio of 1:4 frequency-matched by age, sex, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and i...

What's in a Name? Classification of Diabetes Mellitus in Veterinary Medicine and Why It Matters
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a syndrome caused by various etiologies. The clinical manifestations of DM are not indicative of the cause of the disease, but might be indicative of the stage and severity of the disease process. Accurately diagnosing and classifying diabetic dogs and cats by the underlying disease process is essential for current and future studies on early detection, prevention, and treatment of underlying disease. Here, we review the current etiology‐based classification of DM and definitions of DM types in human medicine and discuss key points on the pathogenesis of each DM type and prediabetes. We then rev...

Traditional medicine, Sobokchukeo ‑Tang, modulates the inflammatory response in adipocytes and macrophages.
Traditional medicine, Sobokchukeo‑Tang, modulates the inflammatory response in adipocytes and macrophages. Mol Med Rep. 2016 Dec 07;: Authors: Lee H, Shim EH, Lee MS, Myung CS Abstract Sobokchukeo-Tang (ST) is a well-known formula that is used for treating primary dysmenorrhea caused by blood stasis syndrome (BSS) in Korea and China. The current study investigated the anti‑inflammatory and anti‑adipogenesis effects of ST on adipocytes and macrophages. The anti‑inflammatory efficacy of ST was evaluated in RAW 264.7 cells and differentiated THP‑1 cells. To induce inflammation, the cells were t...

Effects of Huanglian-Renshen-Decoction, a Fixed Mixture of Traditional Chinese Medicine, on the Improvement of Glucose Metabolism by Maintenance of Pancreatic β Cell Identity in db/db Mice.
Authors: Yuan F, Wang D, Ma L, Qin X, Gong J, Hu M, Su H, Dong H, Lu F Abstract Huanglian-Renshen-Decoction (HRD) is widely used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in China. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear. We aimed to investigate the mechanism by which HRD regulates the glucose level. Forty 7-8-week-old db/db (BSK) mice were randomly assigned to the following four groups: model, low dose HRD (LHRD), high dose HRD (HHRD), and saxagliptin (SAX). Additionally, 10 db/m mice were assigned to control group. The experimental mice were administered 3.03g/kg/d and 6.06g/kg/d of HRD in the LHRD and HHRD g...

Family Medicine: Data Driven Practice with Emphasis on Underserved Patients
Family physicians' role and interest in caring for underserved or undertreated patients is quite evident in this issue of JABFM. One in 5 family physicians provide urgent or emergency care, which is particularly important in rural areas. Methods and resources for obtaining information about social determinants of health are variable. A data-rich article considers how family medicine practice ownership might be associated with quality outcomes. We have articles on using text messages to increase HIV testing and colon cancer screening for Latino patients. For patients with significant behavioral health disorders, 1 article c...
