Identifying search terms
For any literature search, you will need to identify your search terms.  What words or phrases are you going to search for?   What thesaurus terms are you going to choose? If you are doing a detailed search for evidence for a systematic review, or doing a systematic search for some other reason, identification of search terms will include identification of synonyms, that is, alternative terms for the concept you are interested in.Here are some possible ways to identify thesaurus and free text terms, and synonyms.  Scoping searchUse a PICO grid or similar to identify the search concepts, and search for those....

Prevalence, Characteristics and Clinical Diagnosis of Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young Due to Mutations in HNF1A, HNF4A, and Glucokinase: Results from the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth.
Conclusions/Interpretation:In this systematic study of MODY in a large pediatric US diabetes cohort, unselected by referral pattern or family history, MODY was usually misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated with insulin. While many type 2 diabetes-like metabolic features were less common in the mutation-positive group, no single characteristic identified all patients with mutations. Clinicians should be alert to the possibility of MODY diagnosis, particularly in antibody negative youth with diabetes. PMID: 23771925 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

On RSS Readers, Divorce and Marriage
In just a few days, Google Reader will be history.  I've used it to create over 18,000 Tweets, so yes, I will miss Google Reader.  The end has pushed me into a divorce (or maybe it's just a separation?!) — from Google.  I describe my Google divorce as kind of like when a married couple with children decide to separate … they still have to see their exes for the sake of the kids (and I still have my blogs with Google's Blogger, for now anyway), and it may be a cordial, but not quite blissful separation, but is still necessary.A number of my fellow diabetes blogging peers have already migrated from Google'...

Translating search strategies (updated)
This is an update of a post from November 2015.If you are doing a systematic review, you will need to run the same search in more than one database.I use the term " translation " for the process of modifying a search so that it works in another database. It is important to run the same search in all databases. So, if you have a search that works in Ovid Medline, what do you need to change to make it work in another database like PsycINFO or Embase?  Those other databases have different features or functionality. There are three areas where translation is necessary, once you have finalised your strategy:Search syntax – ...

Identifying and Describing the Impact of Cyclone, Storm and Flood Related Disasters on Treatment Management, Care and Exacerbations of Non-communicable Diseases and the Implications for Public Health
Conclusion Cyclone, flood and storm related disasters impact on treatment management and overall care for people with NCDs. This results in an increased risk of exacerbation of illness or even death. The interruption may be caused by a range of factors, such as damaged transport routes, reduced health services, loss of power and evacuations. The health impact varies according to the NCD. For people with chronic respiratory diseases, a disaster increases the risk of acute exacerbation. Meanwhile, for people with cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes there is an increased risk of their illness exacerbating, which can ...

Association between Exposure to p,p ′-DDT and Its Metabolite p,p′-DDE with Obesity: Integrated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: We classified p,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE as “presumed” to be obesogenic for humans, based on a moderate level of primary human evidence, a moderate level of primary in vivo evidence, and a moderate level of supporting evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP527 Received: 17 May 2016 Revised: 04 May 2017 Accepted: 09 May 2017 Published: 18 September 2017 Please address correspondence to M.A. La Merrill, Dept. of Environmental Toxicology, University of California, Davis, 1 Shields Ave., 4245 Meyer Hall, Davis, CA 95616-5270 USA. The clinical characteristics and mutation search within monogenic diabetes genes in type 1 diabetes patients with long-term disease and preserved kidney function
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with long-term T1DM and well-preserved kidney function are characterized by good glycemic control, high HDL-cholesterol, low insulin requirements and near normal BMI. Monogenic diabetes mutations are not frequent among them.PMID:34825797 | DOI:10.20452/pamw.16143

Translating search strategies
Not sure if I borrowed this term, or invented it, but I mean modifying a search strategy for use in another database.   For example, if you have a Medline strategy, what do you need to change to make it work in, say, PsycINFO or Embase?  Other databases might have different features or functionality. There are two areas where translation is necessary, once you have finalised your strategy.  I have assumed in what follows that you have a Medline strategy, and want to translate it for use in other databases. One area is search syntax (proximity operators, truncation, and so on), and the other is subject hea...

A chemoinformatics search for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors ligands revealed a new pan-agonist able to reduce lipid accumulation and improve insulin sensitivity
Eur J Med Chem. 2022 Mar 16;235:114240. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2022.114240. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear receptors involved in the regulation of the metabolic homeostasis and therefore represent valuable therapeutic targets for the treatment of metabolic diseases. The development of more balanced drugs interacting with PPARs, devoid of the side-effects showed by the currently marketed PPARγ full agonists, is considered the major challenge for the pharmaceutical companies. Here we present a chemoinformatics search approach for new ligands that let us ident...

Herbal medicine for the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and associated oligo/amenorrhoea and hyperandrogenism; a review of the laboratory evidence for effects with corroborative clinical findings
Conclusions: Preclinical and clinical studies provide evidence that six herbal medicines may have beneficial effects for women with oligo/amenorrhea, hyperandrogenism and PCOS. However the quantity of pre-clinical data was limited, and the quality of clinical evidence was variable. Further pre-clinical studies are needed to explain the effects of herbal medicines not included in this review with current clinical evidence but an absence of pre-clinical data.

Nutritional Factors and Preservation of C-Peptide in Youth With Recently Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes: SEARCH Nutrition Ancillary Study.
CONCLUSIONS Increased intake of branched-chain amino acids and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may support preservation of β-cell function. This represents a new direction for research to improve prognosis for type 1 diabetes. PMID: 23801797 [PubMed - in process]

Electromagnetic Interference From Electronic Devices Used in the Management of Type 1 Diabetes Can Impair the Performance of an Avalanche Transceiver in Search Mode
Conclusions Electromagnetic interference produced by some diabetes devices when held within 30 cm of a searching avalanche transceiver can impair the ability to locate a signal. Such interference could significantly compromise the outcome of a companion rescue scenario. Further investigation using other pumps and rtCGMS devices is required to evaluate all available diabetes electronics. Meantime, all electronic diabetes devices including rtCGMS and insulin pumps should not be used within 30 cm of an avalanche transceiver.

Chemokine ligand 2 and paraoxonase-1 in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: The search for alternative causative factors.
Abstract The incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is constantly increasing. Despite this is apparently associated with the growing increase in obesity, insulin resistance and obesity-related metabolic disturbances their presence is not a necessary or sufficient condition to explain the accumulation of fat in the liver. Conversely, NAFLD is a predictor of other metabolic risks. NAFLD is currently the most frequent chronic liver disease but should not be considered benign or anecdotic because a considerable proportion of patients with NAFLD progress to cirrhosis and end-stage liver d...
