Dismantling the Justice Silos: Avoiding the pitfalls and reaping the benefits of information-sharing between forensic science, medicine and law
Abstract: Forensic science is increasingly relied on by police and the courts to exonerate the innocent and to establish links to crime. With this increased reliance the potential for unjust outcomes increases, especially in serious matters for two reasons. The more serious the matter, the more likely that evidence mishandling can lead to wrongful imprisonment, and the more likely the personnel involved will be multi-disciplinary (police, medicine, law, forensic science), and multi-organisational (Health, Justice, private legal/medical, police). The importance of identifying effective multi-organisational interactions was ...

A Glimpse into the Future - Personalized Medicine for Smoking Cessation.
Abstract The devastating consequences of tobacco smoking for individuals and societies motivate studies to identify and understand the biological pathways that drive smoking behaviors, so that more effective preventions and treatments can be developed. Cigarette smokers respond to nicotine in different ways, with a small number of smokers remaining lifelong low-level smokers who never exhibit any symptoms of dependence, and a larger group becoming nicotine dependent. Whether or not a smoker transitions to nicotine dependence has clear genetic contributions, and variants in the genes encoding the α5-α3-β4 nicoti...

Original Articles Association of Anxiety Disorders and Depression With Incident Heart Failure
Conclusions Anxiety disorders, MDD, and co-occurring anxiety and MDD are associated with incident HF in this large cohort of Veteran’s Administration patients free of CVD at baseline. This risk of HF is greater after accounting for protective effects of psychotropic medications. Prospective studies are needed to clarify the role of depression and anxiety and their pharmacological treatment in the etiology of HF.

Tobacco cessation outcomes in a cohort of patients attending a chest medicine outpatient clinic in Bangalore city, southern India.
We present long-term treatment outcomes of out-patient, tobacco cessation treatments from a specialty clinic setting in southern India. Methods: Patients seen in a tobacco cessation clinic were characterized for tobacco use, nicotine dependence and motivation for quitting and offered pharmacologic/non-pharmacologic treatment. They were subsequently contacted telephonically at a mean (±standard deviation) of 24 (±9.1) months to assess tobacco cessation outcome defined as 'point prevalence of 1-month abstinence' by self-reporting. Promoting sustainable community service in the 4th year of medical school: a longitudinal service-learning elective.
Conclusions: SERVE is a unique 1-year course that reengages 4th-year medical students in service to their communities in a structured educational environment. SERVE students report that the course has increased their involvement in the community, supported their growth into a teaching role, and enhanced continuity within student-run free clinics. Future directions include assessing the impact of SERVE students on the experience of preclinical medical students in student-run free clinics; community response to SERVE projects; and the impact of SERVE on volunteerism, primary care specialty choice, and future practice in unde...

Bullous emphysema – Not always nicotine-related! Unusual distribution of emphysema in a patient with a rare hobby
Publication date: 2014 Source:Respiratory Medicine Case Reports, Volume 12 Author(s): Camilla Lüttecke-Hecht , Tim O. Hirche In a patient admitted for further investigation of haemoptysis and dyspnoea and known emphysema of the lung, a remarkable distribution of emphysematous bullae could be detected on CT-imaging. Further history, besides smoking, revealed apnoea diving-activity during younger adult age. The distinct appearance of partially septated pleura-based bullae lead to the suspicion of a positive-pressure barotrauma of the lungs in the past, now complicated by infection and bleeding. This case highlights the im...

Accidental Deaths by Hanging Among Children in Istanbul, Turkey: Retrospective Analysis of Medicolegal Autopsies in 33 Years
In conclusion, our study showed that although accidental death by hanging took place rarely in these ages, all of the victims were between the ages of 1 and 13 years who recently started walking and entering their teenage years. It is important not to leave the children at home or in the playgrounds alone for a long time (unsupervised at home or in the playgrounds). Precautionary measures must be taken against danger, and the design of materials manufactured for this age group must be reconsidered.
