Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Persons living with HIV in the Era of Combined Antiretroviral Treatment
AbstractComplementary and alternative medicine (CAM), often pursued independent of prescribing clinicians, may interact with traditional treatments, yet CAM use has not been well characterized among people living with HIV (PLWH) in the combined antiretroviral therapy (ART) era. We analyzed data from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (October 2012 –April 2015) to characterize CAM use in PLWH on ART. CAM users were more likely to have lived longer with HIV, report more bothersome symptoms, be prescribed more benzodiazepines and opioids, and consume less nicotine and alcohol. Given its high prevalence, clinicians should routi...

Outcomes in South Asia Matter for the World
South Asia plays a critical role on the global stage. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan collectively represent almost 30% of the total population living in low- and middle-income countries. Without significant progress in these countries, the world will not be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. These 17 global goals were adopted by all countries in 2015 as a United Nations Resolution also known as “The Future We Want.” The goals commit the world to working toward ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all, as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Goa...

Use of higher-nicotine/tar-yield (regular full-flavor) cigarettes is associated with nicotine dependence and smoking during pregnancy among U.S. women
We examined whether use of full-flavor cigarettes was associated with greater odds of nicotine dependence using the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence and Nicotine Dependence Syndrome Scale (NDSS), controlling for other smoking characteristics. We next compared prevalence of smoking and use of full-flavor versus lower-yield cigarettes among non-pregnant versus pregnant women and across trimesters. Lastly, we examined whether pregnancy was associated with greater odds of using full-flavor cigarettes after controlling for potential confounders. Use of full-flavor cigarettes was associated with greater adjusted odds of n...

Tobacco and nicotine delivery product use in a national sample of pregnant women
We examined prevalence and correlates of using cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other tobacco/nicotine delivery products in a U.S. national sample of pregnant women. Data were obtained from all pregnant women (≥18 years) in the first wave of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH, 2013–2014) Study (N =388). Prevalence of current and prior use of tobacco/nicotine products was examined overall and among current cigarette smokers. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine correlates of use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah and cigars. Overall prevalence was highest for cigarettes (13.8%), followed by ...

Do you vape? Leveraging electronic health records to assess clinician documentation of electronic nicotine delivery system use among adolescents and adults
Publication date: Available online 16 August 2017 Source:Preventive Medicine Author(s): Kelly C. Young-Wolff, Daniella Klebaner, Bruce Folck, Lisa Carter-Harris, Ramzi G. Salloum, Judith J. Prochaska, Renee Fogelberg, Andy S.L. Tan Use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has increased substantially over the past decade. However, unlike smoking, which is systematically captured by clinicians through routine screening and discrete documentation fields in the electronic health record (EHR), unknown is the extent to which clinicians are documenting patients' use of ENDS. Data were gathered from medical visits with ...

We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 46,581 U.S. participants with commercial or Medicare Advantage insurance from Humana. Author response to “management of alcohol withdrawal and nicotine replacement therapy” manuscript 16429
We appreciate the letter provided on our review, “The emergency medicine management of severe alcohol withdrawal.” [1] The letter expresses two primary concerns: 1) Need for prevention and management of concomitant problems, and 2) Ketamine's use in alcohol withdrawal. We agree in that prevention of alcohol withdrawal is vital in improving pat ient outcomes. One of the most common complications of chronic alcohol use is withdrawal, and the best treatment of withdrawal is to avoid its occurrence in the first place.

The differential impact of state tobacco control policies on cessation treatment utilization across established tobacco disparities groups
Publication date: December 2017 Source:Preventive Medicine, Volume 105 Author(s): Jennifer Dahne, Amy E. Wahlquist, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Bryan W. Heckman, K. Michael Cummings, Matthew J. Carpenter Tobacco control policies are effective in promoting quit attempts and increase the likelihood that smokers use evidence-based cessation treatments (e.g., nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), non-NRT medications, behavioral treatment, and/or quitlines). However, what is less clear is how these policies might differentially impact different groups of smokers, perhaps in some cases even widening disparities in the use of evide...
