Teen Vaping Rises Dramatically; Drinking, Opioid Use Declines
By Jacqueline Howard, CNN (CNN) — Vaping among America’s teenagers continues to climb, while the use of other substances — such as alcohol and opioids — has declined in recent years, according to a new report. Monday’s report, called Monitoring the Future, comes from the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and is based on an annual survey of drug and alcohol use and attitudes among eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders in the United States. This year’s survey included 44,482 students from 392 public and private schools across the country. Behind drinking alcohol, va...

Bill Belichick Explains How Cam Newton Set Up Final Play Before Game-Winning Field Goal Vs. Jets
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — On television, in the frenzy of a last-minute drive in a tied football game, a completion to a wide-open receiver can sometimes just look like a piece of cake reception. Generally, though, there’s a bit more that goes into it. Take, for instance, Cam Newton’s 20-yard completion to Jakobi Meyers in the waning seconds of Monday night’s meeting between the Patriots and Jets. With Gregg Williams’ defense playing zone coverage, there wasn’t a soul near Meyers when he made the catch and fell to the ground before the Patriots frantically called time...

What To Watch For When Ravens Visit Patriots On Sunday Night Football
BOSTON (CBS) — America sure is getting to see plenty of the New England Patriots this year, as Sunday night’s date with the Ravens will mark New England’s fourth prime-time game of the season and second in as many weeks. The nation got to see the Patriots lose in Seattle (Week 2) and Kansas City (Week 4) before finally getting a late-night win over the Jets on Monday. Now comes a much stiffer test, as the 6-2 Ravens roll into Foxboro. The Patriots enter as seven-point underdogs, a situation that hasn’t been the case for Bill Belichick’s team at home in a long, long time. Whether or not they ca...

Ups & Downs: Patriots Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With Stunning Win Over Ravens
By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The NFL playoffs are back on the table in New England. The Patriots pulled off a fairly shocking 23-17 upset over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, a won that greatly improves their postseason hopes. It wasn’t pretty, a sloshy win at a rain-soaked Gillette Stadium. But it’s the team’s best win of the season, an impressive victory made possible by a solid rush attack, some trickery, a lot of ball security, and some timely defense. “We’re finding ways to win and that’s pretty much been it,” quarterback Cam Newton said after the v...

Celtics, Pacers Both Reportedly Offered Gordon Hayward Over $100 Million
BOSTON (CBS) — Gordon Hayward is no longer a member of the Boston Celtics, after he bolted via free agency when the Charlotte Hornets gave him a four-year, $120 million contract. Losing Hayward is a big blow to the Celtics, especially since they lost a core player for nothing. But the blow was softened a bit because there was no way the Celtics would commit that much money and that many years to a 30-year-old who has battled injuries the last three years. Right? As it turns out, the Celtics seemed open to giving Hayward another big-money extension. According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, both Boston and the Indiana Pace...

Pressuring Deshaun Watson Might Have Helped And Other Leftover Patriots Thoughts
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Deshaun Watson is a pretty good quarterback. Some might even say he’s great. They might be right. But here’s the thing: When you give any NFL quarterback all the time in the world to set his feet, stand tall and scan the field, he’s going to end up looking like some lethal combination of Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. On Sunday against the Patriots, Watson might have been even better than that. Watson obviously deserves a ton of credit for delivering some of the most absurdly accurate lasers that have ever been launched on an NFL field. You know, passes...

What To Watch For When Cardinals Visit Patriots In Foxboro
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The New England Patriots have used up just about all of their room for error this year. If they want to keep their remote postseason chances alive, they’re going to have to play nearly perfect from here on out. That effort will begin Sunday afternoon, when the Arizona Cardinals visit Gillette Stadium. The Cardinals enter Sunday’s game looking to avoid trouble of their own. They lost last weekend in Seattle, dropping their record to 6-4. They’re currently hanging on to the third and final wild-card spot in the NFC, but another loss would welcome Chicago (...

Too Much Sleep Linked To Greater Risk Of Disease & Death, Study Finds
(CNN) — The recommended amount of sleep for adults is six to eight hours a night. Sleeping more than those hours is associated with an increased risk of death and cardiovascular diseases, says a global study published Wednesday in the European Heart Journal. Looking at data from 21 countries, across seven regions, the research team found that people sleeping more than the recommended upper limit of eight hours increased their risk of major cardiovascular events, like stroke or heart failure, as well as death by up to 41%. But a possible reason for this could be that people have underlying conditions causing them to s...

Smoking During Pregnancy Doubles Risk Of Sudden Death For Baby, Study Says
(CNN) — Smoking even one cigarette a day during pregnancy can double the chance of sudden unexpected death for your baby, according to a new study analyzing over 20 million births, including over 19,000 unexpected infant deaths. The study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, analyzed data on smoking during pregnancy from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s birth/infant death data set between 2007 and 2011 and found that the risk of death rises by .07 for each additional cigarette smoked, up to 20 a day, a typical pack of cigarettes. By the time you smoke a pack a day, the study found, yo...

A low-cost eco-friendly fast drug extraction technique for environmental and bio-monitoring of psychoactive drug in urban water and sports-persons' urine samples
In this study, we developed a miniaturized novel green, low-cost, sensitive, in-syringe-based semi-automated fast drug extraction (FaDEx) protocol coupled with gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) for the efficient environmental and bio-monitoring of nicotine in aqueous samples. The FaDEx method consists of two steps; firstly, the target analyte was extracted using dimethyl carbonate (a green solvent) and extraction salts. After that, the extraction solvent was passed automatically through the solid-phase extraction cartridge at a constant flow rate for the cleanup process to achieve the sensitive nicotin...

Tufts Study: Secondhand Smoke As Harmful To Pets As To People
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ten years ago, Shirley Worthington rushed Tigger to the vet when the dog’s mouth started bleeding. When she was told he had cancer, she knew to blame her heavy smoking, an addiction she couldn’t kick until after her pet died. Secondhand smoke can cause lung and nasal cancer in dogs, malignant lymphoma in cats and allergy and respiratory problems in both animals, according to studies done at Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts, Colorado State University and other schools. The number of pets that die each year from tobacco exposure isn’t available, bu...
