Impact of Physician Specialty and Operator Experience on Outcomes Following Endovascular Aneurysm Repair
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is commonly performed by interventional radiologists, cardiologists, general surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, and vascular surgeons, with each specialty having differences in residency structure, operative experience, and subspecialty training. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surgeon specialty on outcomes after EVAR.

Early Introduction of IR to Premedical and Medical Students: Initiatives at a Single U.S. Institution
In 2012, the American Board of Medical Specialties approved the American Board of Radiology’s application for a dual primary certificate in interventional radiology (IR) and diagnostic radiology (DR) (1). This approval not only designated IR as the 37th primary certificate in the United States, but it also marked a milestone in recognizing that IR is a unique area of medicine that requires a distinct skill set for future trainees. The new primary certificate will result in many vascular and IR (VIR) fellowship positions being converted to integrated IR/DR residency positions.

Scrubbing with Charles Dotter on an Angioplasty
January 15, 1976: It was my first case on my first day of my first rotation on “angiography.” I was in my second year of a 3-year diagnostic radiology residency. Interventional radiology as a subspecialty did not yet exist at that time; invasive intraarterial and intravenous vascular procedures were done in the “angiography” or “special procedures” sections of diagnostic radiology departments.

Invited commentary
During the last 20 years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has created institutional and individual National Research Service Awards (NRSA) to train physician-scientists, and yet, converting physician-scientist trainees into successful NIH independent investigators is difficult. Current impediments to physician-scientist training include escalating medical school debt, extended residency training, and limited compensation during training (http://www.report.nih.gov/Workforce/PSW/development.aspx).

0 + 5 Vascular Surgery Residents’ Operative Experience in General Surgery: An Analysis of Operative Logs from 12 Integrated Programs
Integrated (0 + 5) vascular surgery (VS) residency programs must include 24 months of training in core general surgery. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education currently does not require specific case numbers in general surgery for 0 + 5 trainees; however, program directors have structured this time to optimize operative experience. The aim of this study is to determine the case volume and type of cases that VS residents are exposed to during their core surgery training.

Training in dialysis access - charting future success.
CONCLUSIONS: The future dialysis access training must also accommodate learners with diverse individual backgrounds, and different levels of professional (skill) development. To be effective and accessible, a variety of educational system, for example on site or web based is needed. Collaborative initiatives for global dialysis access training are currently underway. The 2017 Integrated IR Residency Match: Results of a National Survey of Applicants and Program Directors
Conclusions The completion of the first large-scale integrated IR match represents a paradigm shift in the way in which IR practitioners are recruited and trained. This study provides valuable benchmark data and analysis that can be used to improve efforts to match the best-fitting applicants into the integrated IR residency and improve future match cycles for applicants and PDs alike.

Job Search Help
I am currently at finishing residency this June. Was interested in general jobs in the NYC area. Surprisingly the job market is a ton better then what I expected after hearing much of doom and gloom and getting a job offer was much easier then i expected. The problem I have is selecting which job to take as there is very little information on the jobs unlike med schools/residency. I have narrowed down my choices to two places and dont know what to do. Job 1.) private practice group offering... Job Search Help

Implementation of an academic half day in a vascular surgery residency program improves trainee and faculty satisfaction with surgical indications conference
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education mandates scheduled didactics for residency programs but allows flexibility in implementation. Work-hour restrictions, patient care duties, and operative schedules create barriers to attendance for surgical trainees. We explored vascular surgery trainees and faculty perceptions on trainees operative preparation and participation, and overall fund of knowledge after implementing an academic half day conference (AHD) schedule.

Vascular Surgery Fellow AMA
I am a first year vascular surgery fellow. Ask me anything about anything from surgery residency to fellowship. I also didn’t match to my initial subspecialty choice when I first applied way back when and am now happy about it.
