The Tailored Opioid Reduction Strategy (TORS): A Quality Improvement Initiative to Reduce Opioid Prescription Following Hysterectomy
CONCLUSION: TORS implementation was successful in reducing the rate of discharge opioid prescriptions and the total amount of opiates prescribed in patients undergoing hysterectomy with no decrease in patient satisfaction or change in postoperative pain scores. We believe it can be applied more broadly across different surgical patient populations to prevent opioid abuse.PMID:37709142 | DOI:10.1016/j.jogc.2023.102214

A mixed methods study to uncover impediments to accurate diagnosis of nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis in the USA
ConclusionsDelayed nr-axSpA diagnosis is common and reflects HCP knowledge gaps and frequent patient presentation with dominant nonaxial symptoms. Targeted HCP education, research into early disease patterns, and interventions sensitive to the broader spectrum of nr-axSpA manifestations are needed to improve timely diagnosis.Key Points• Patients with nr-axSpA often see multiple types of HCPs, and multiple rheumatologists, before receiving a diagnosis.• Both patients and HCPs are unfamiliar with nr-axSpA and its symptoms, lacking understanding that nr-axSpA can occur in young people, females, and those presenting with n...

Anger treatment via CBAT delivered remotely: Outcomes on psychometric and self-monitored measures of anger
Clin Psychol Psychother. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1002/cpp.2907. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies of anger treatment have often reported on reappraisal and relaxation techniques delivered in person to forensic and psychiatric samples. The present study evaluated an integrative programme of cognitive-behavioural affective therapy (CBAT) delivered remotely to chronic pain sufferers with comorbid anger. Volunteers (N = 54) were randomly assigned to either CBAT or an Emotional Education (EE) group, both receiving hour-long videorecorded sessions twice a week for 4 weeks plus weekly calls by telephone. At 1-month post-treatmen...

Pain neuroscience education for reducing pain and kinesiophobia in patients with chronic neck pain: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionsPNE effectively reduced pain intensity and kinesiophobia in patients with CNP. A longer PNE time leads to greater pain reduction and is more effective in adults than in adolescents. Further studies are required to examine the long-term effects on CNP management.SignificanceThis is the first meta-analysis evaluating the effectiveness of treating chronic neck pain with pain neuroscience education. Pain neuroscience education is successful in reducing pain and decreasing kinesiophobia in the chronic neck pain population. Longer treatment time leads to greater pain reduction.

6 Things to Do if Your Doctor Isn ’ t Listening to You
Liz Helms still remembers the way her doctor looked at her 30 years ago, when she described the severe pain she was experiencing in the area around her jaw. She told him she had limited facial movement and frequent muscle spasms, and that it felt like she was being struck by lightning again and again. She cataloged the ways her life had turned upside down. “But I could see it in his face—he either wasn’t listening or didn’t believe me,” Helms says. She remembers thinking: “They treat animals better than they’re treating humans.” [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] ...
