Enhancing biomedical search interfaces with images
We describe a search system for biomedical documents that leverages image modalities and an existing index server. We integrate a problem-specific taxonomy of image modalities and image-based data into a custom search system. Our solution features a front-end interface to enhance classical document search results with image-related data, including page thumbnails, figures, captions and image-modality information. We demonstrate the system on a subset of the CORD-19 document collection. A quantitative evaluation demonstrates higher precision and recall for biomedical document retrieval. A qualitative evaluation with domain ...

Anesthetic Implications for Patients With Swyer-James Syndrome
Conclusion: Though SJS may be an incidental finding, these patients may have marked symptomatology, recurrent pulmonary infections, and pneumothoraces that may require lung resection. The patients tolerated anesthesia well. In severe SJS cases, pulmonary pathology and perioperative management strategies parallel that of patients with severe obstructive pulmonary disease.

IP165. YouTube Carotid Endarterectomy Videos: Are Academic Institutions Keeping Up With the Content?
Learners are turning to the Internet and YouTube for information about disease states and potential interventions. Vascular Surgery Curriculum for Medical Students: A National Targeted Needs Assessment
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the lack of an existing structured curriculum for medical students, the desire for a standardized curriculum, and key topics and experiences that are felt to be important for students to cover. With this information in hand, vascular educators have the potential to enhance the learning experience of medical students rotating through the service by developing a standardized curriculum.PMID:34688874 | DOI:10.1016/j.avsg.2021.08.040

Determining COVID-19's impact on an academic medical library's literature search service
CONCLUSION: The overall decrease in literature search requests, decrease in research searches, decrease in searches among all patron affiliations, and increase in searches on a COVID-related topic suggest that healthcare worker and institutional priorities changed during the pandemic. The results revealed research interests during the first year of the pandemic, as well as an overall change in library service functionality.PMID:36589305 | PMC:PMC9782504 | DOI:10.5195/jmla.2022.1447
