Cell cycle arrest: A breakthrough in the supportive care of older cancer patients
CONCLUSIONS: CCA is a novel proactive approach to the toxicity of chemotherapy of special interest to older patients. At the very least it may prevent all forms of myelotoxicity with a single agent, obviating the risk and cost of polypharmacy. It allows to avoid the complications of myelopoietic growth factors which include severe pain, stem cell competition, bone marrow exhaustion, and hematological malignancies. It may allow the treatment of frail patients with full chemotherapy doses. It is also reasonable to expect that may complications other common and sometimes lethal complications of chemotherapy such as stomatitis...

Factors predicting the transition from acute to persistent pain in people with 'sciatica: the FORECAST longitudinal prognostic factor cohort study protocol
Introduction Sciatica is a common condition and is associated with higher levels of pain, disability, poorer quality of life, and increased use of health resources compared with low back pain alone. Although many patients recover, a third develop persistent sciatica symptoms. It remains unclear, why some patients develop persistent sciatica as none of the traditionally considered clinical parameters (eg, symptom severity, routine MRI) are consistent prognostic factors. The FORECAST study (factors predicting the transition from acute to persistent pain in people with ‘sciatica’) will take a different approach by...

The Effectiveness of Various Types of Electrical Stimulation of the Spinal Cord for Chronic Pain in Patients with Postherpetic Neuralgia: A Literature Review
CONCLUSIONS: Spinal cord stimulation is an established treatment option for patients with pharmacologically resistant PHN. High-frequency stimulation, burst stimulation, and dorsal root ganglion stimulation are promising options in the management of PHN due to the absence of paresthesias which can be painful for patients with PHN. But more research is still required to recommend the widespread use of these new methods.PMID:37007861 | PMC:PMC10065853 | DOI:10.1155/2023/6015680

Unusual presentation of adult granulosa cell tumor. A case report and review of the literature
We report a new and rare case of an extraovarian adult granulosa cell tumor occurring in a 66-year-old woman who was presented with severe abdominal pain focused on the left iliac fossa. The immunohistopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a paratubal adult granulosa cell tumor. This paper illustrates the histogenetic origin of granulosa cell tumor, its clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features.

Symptom palliation with QUAD Shot radiation therapy to penile metastasis derived from descending colon cancer: a case report
AbstractA 54-year-old man was diagnosed with descending colon cancer with metastases in the liver, para-aortic lymph nodes, and penis, and chemotherapy was introduced after construction of a colostomy. The patient reported only mild penile pain at the time of diagnosis; however, the pain gradually worsened and interfered with his daily life. Opioids did not provide sufficient analgesia, and the patient developed dysuria and priapism. Through construction of a cystostomy, palliative radiotherapy with QUAD Shot regimen (14  Gy in 4 fractions twice-daily on 2 days repeated every 4 weeks) to the penile metastasis was starte...

Efficacy of mecobalamin (vitamin B12) in the treatment of long-term pain in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia: protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Introduction Fibromyalgia causes long-term pain. It affects at least 2% of the population, the majority being women. In addition, extended symptoms corresponding to vitamin B12 deficiency occur. Findings from several studies have indicated that vitamin B12 may be a possible treatment for pain in fibromyalgia. The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate whether vitamin B12 decreases pain sensitivity and the experience of pain (ie, hyperalgesia and allodynia) in women with fibromyalgia. Methods and analysis The study is a randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blind, clinical trial with two parallel groups which are admini...

Cognitive and mental fatigue in chronic pain: cognitive functions, emotional aspects, biomarkers and neuronal correlates--protocol for a descriptive cross-sectional study
This study protocol describes a cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the presence of self-rated mental fatigue, objectively measured cognitive fatigability and executive functions and their relation to other cognitive functions, inflammatory biomarkers and brain connectivity in patients with CP. We will control for pain-related factors such as pain intensity and secondary factors such as sleep disturbances and psychological well-being. Two hundred patients 18–50 years with CP will be recruited for a neuropsychological investigation at two outpatient study centres in Sweden. The patients are compared with 36 h...
