Development and validation of a multimodal feature fusion prognostic model for lumbar degenerative disease based on machine learning: a study protocol
In this study, we develop and validate a clinical prognostic model to determine whether patients will experience complications within 6 months after percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). Baseline data will be collected from patients’ electronic medical records. As of now, we have recruited a total of 580 participants (n=400 for development, n=180 for validation). The study’s primary outcome will be the incidence of complications within 6 months after PELD. We will use an ML algorithm and a multiple logistic regression analysis model to screen factors affecting surgical efficacy. We will evaluate the...

Misunderstandings about opioid use disorder
At a recent scientific conference on narcotics, a researcher mused, “Honestly, opioids make me feel gross. I don’t see how anyone could get addicted.” This is a little like a doctor in the delivery end of a needle saying, “Honestly, you’re a wimp. Parkinson ’ s Patients Get More Mobility And Better Balance With Whole Body Vibration Therapy
I’ve always believed that with a little coaxing, your body can self-heal – and the same is true for your brain. Conventional doctors will never tell you this. For them, being a physician means managing symptoms with Big Pharma meds. But for years, I’ve been helping patients recover using dietary changes, lasers, stem cells, and hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT). These therapies help your body heal itself. No Big Pharma drug can do this. But I recently began researching another natural therapy – called Whole Body Vibration, or WBV – that can help Parkinson’s patients regain their mobility and balance. WBV isn’t new. It...

WAFER trial: a study protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial comparing wide-awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) to general and regional anaesthesia with tourniquet for flexor tendon repair
Introduction Flexor tendons are traditionally repaired under either general anaesthesia (GA) or regional anaesthesia (RA), allowing for the use of an arm tourniquet to minimise blood loss and establish a bloodless surgical field. However, the use of tourniquets exposes the patient to certain risks, including skin, muscle and nerve injuries. A recent advancement in anaesthesia delivery involves the use of a wide-awake approach where no sedation nor tourniquets are used (wide-awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT)). WALANT uses local anaesthetic with epinephrine to provide pain relief and vasoconstriction, reducing o...

Sixth Annual Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Symposium highlights: work in progress or standard care?
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2023 Jun 22;36(5):651-656. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2023.2221112. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTEnhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have demonstrated effectiveness in accelerating patient recovery and improving outcomes.
