Optimal dose of perineural dexamethasone for the prolongation of analgesia for peripheral nerve blocks: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction Perineural use of dexamethasone is demonstrated to extend the analgesia duration of peripheral nerve blocks (PNB), but its optimal dose remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to determine the optimal dose of perineural dexamethasone in the prolongation of analgesia for PNB. Methods and analysis PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science will be searched from their inception to 1 March 2023. Language will be restricted to English. Randomised controlled trials that compared the efficacy and safety of different doses of perineural dexamethasone f...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6386: Exploring the Synergy of Music and Medicine in Healthcare: Expert Insights into the Curative and Societal Role of the Relationship between Music and Medicine
¶ffler-Stastka Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between medicine, health perception, and music as well as the role of music in the healthcare setting. To gain insights into the dynamics between these two fields, we gathered opinions from attendees and presenters at an international conference on music medicine, musicians’ health, and music therapy. A team of six interviewers conducted a total of 26 semi-structured interviews. The interview guide focused on four predetermined themes: (1) “music in medicine”, (2) “performing arts medicine&rdquo...

Early Supervised Incremental Resistance Training (ESpIRiT) following cardiac surgery via a median sternotomy: a study protocol of a multicentre randomised controlled trial
Introduction There is no consistency in current practice pertaining to the prescription and progression of upper limb resistance exercise following cardiac surgery via median sternotomy. The aim of this study is to investigate whether less restrictive sternal precautions with the addition of early-supervised resistance training exercise improves upper limb function and facilitates recovery following median sternotomy. Methods and analysis This is double-blind randomised controlled trial, with parallel group, concealed allocation, blinding of patients and assessors, and intention-to-treat analysis. 240 adult participants w...

Endometrial Origins of Stillbirth (EOS), a case-control study of menstrual fluid to understand and prevent preterm stillbirth and associated adverse pregnancy outcomes: study protocol
This study aims to identify differences in menstrual fluid and menstrual cycle characteristics of women who have experienced preterm stillbirth and other associated adverse pregnancy outcomes, compared with those who have not. The association between menstrual fluid composition and menstrual cycle characteristics will also be determined. Methods and analysis This is a case–control study of women who have experienced a late miscarriage, spontaneous preterm birth or preterm stillbirth or a pregnancy complicated by placental insufficiency (fetal growth restriction or pre-eclampsia), compared with those who have had a h...

Is there a difference in the analgesic response to intra-articular bupivacaine injection in people with knee osteoarthritis pain with or without central sensitisation? Protocol of a feasibility randomised controlled trial
Introduction Pain is the main symptom of osteoarthritis (OA) with approximately 50% of patients reporting moderate-to-severe pain. Total knee replacement (TKR) is the ultimate treatment option to alleviate pain in knee OA. Nevertheless, TKR does not provide complete relief for all as approximately 20% of patients experience chronic postoperative pain. Painful peripheral stimuli may alter the central nociceptive pathways leading to central sensitisation that can influence treatment response in patients with OA. Currently, there is no objective protocol for detecting whether a patient will respond to a given treatment. There...

Can baseline features predict a reduction in pain and disability following neck-specific exercise in people with chronic non-specific neck pain?: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Neck-specific exercises (NSEs) are commonly used for the treatment of chronic non-specific neck pain (CNSNP). However, it remains unclear whether baseline features can predict the response to neck-specific exercise (NSE) in people with CNSNP. This systematic review aims to assess whether baseline features such as age, gender, muscle activity, fatigability, endurance and fear of movement can predict pain and disability reduction following a NSE intervention. Methods and analysis This systematic review and meta-analysis will be reported in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic pain has been a major problem in personal quality of life and social economy, causing psychological disorders in people and a larger amount of money loss in society. Some targets were adopted for chronic pain, but the efficacy of the CM nucleus for pain was still unclear. A systematic review was performed to summarize GK surgery and DBS of the CM nucleus for chronic pain. PubMed, Embase and Medline were searched to review all studies discussing GK surgery and DBS on the CM nucleus for chronic pain. Studi...

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Full Conference Review
In June I attended the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. We were told this was the largest psychedelic-related gathering in the history of the planet, attracting about 12,000 attendees and 500 speakers. In this post I’ll share about my experiences and insights from the conference. Here’s a pic from inside the Bellco Theater where the main keynotes were held. The Colorado Convention Center is sizable, and sessions were spread across many different rooms. Even though I didn’t do extra exercise on this trip, I was typically hitting about 1000 calories ...
