Is the equimolar mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (EMONO) associated with audiovisuals effective in reducing pain and side effects during peripheral venous access placement in children? Protocol for a single-centre randomised controlled trial from Italy
Introduction Nurses frequently place a peripheral venous catheter during children’s hospitalisation. Many studies suggest treatment of venipuncture-related pain. The administration of an equimolar mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (EMONO) is employed for pain control; however, no studies have analysed the association between EMONO and audiovisuals. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of EMONO administration when combined with audiovisuals (EMONO+Audiovisual) versus EMONO alone on perceived pain, side effects and level of cooperation during peripheral venous access placement in children aged 2–5...

Efficacy of botulinum toxin A injection in pelvic floor muscles in chronic pelvic pain patients: a study protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial
Introduction Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common multifactorial condition affecting 6%–27% of women aged 18–50 years worldwide. The aim of this randomised controlled trial (RCT) is to investigate the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin A (BTA) injection compared with placebo injections in the pelvic floor muscles in women with CPP to improve pain, function and quality of life. Methods and analysis This is a study protocol for a multicentre, double-blinded placebo controlled RCT conducted in five gynaecology departments across the Netherlands. A total of 94 women over 16 years, with at least 6 months of CP...

Impact of a 12-week olfactory training programme in women with migraine with aura: protocol for a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Introduction Migraine is a leading cause of disability and suffering worldwide. However, conventional pharmacological migraine preventive therapies are often challenging and accompanied by adverse effects. Recently, structured odour exposure has shown to successfully increase pain thresholds in patients with chronic back pain. Despite the importance of the olfactory system in migraine, there are no studies investigating the impact of structured odour exposure in patients with migraine. Methods and analysis This double-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial will be conducted at the Headache Clinic of the University Pain...

Osteoporosis treatment and pain relief: A scoping review
ConclusionConsidering the limitations of the literature, there is a need for more rigorous trials and larger real-life studies taking into account the recommendations published for research in rheumatology and in pain medicine. The identification of responders, patient subtypes, and of analgesic-effect doses would allow optimization and individualization for pain relief in patients with OP.Significance StatementThis scoping review shows that anti-OP drugs may improve pain and quality of life of patients with OP. The heterogeneity in design, choice of endpoints, methodology, comparators and follow-up duration of included ra...

Gratitude: The Art of Savoring.
I was stressed this past past few weeks I finally figured in a sports injury which was supposed to be a way to de-stress my body. The many roles I acquired during the pandemic finally took its toll after almost all required physical presence and face to face activities. Face to face tasks demand full attention and physical presence. You cannot attend two conferences at the same time anymore or listen to two lectures on two different gadgets. It seems that, the technology enabled “always present, always available” does not hold true anymore post pandemic. It came to a frustrating point that I decided to give...

Applying an osteopathic intervention to improve mild to moderate mental health symptoms: a mixed-methods feasibility study protocol
This study will be an explanatory mixed-methods design. Participants will be 30 adults who have mild to moderate mental health symptoms and not experiencing any issues with pain. The feasibility and acceptability of the interventions will be the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes will be physiological measures including heart rate variability, interoceptive accuracy and blood pressure. Psychological outcomes, collected preintervention and postintervention, will also be measured by five standardised questionnaires, which include: (1) the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS); (2) the International Positive and Negat...

Vagueness in Goals-of-Care Conferences for Critically Ill Patients: Types of Hedge Language Used by Physicians
CONCLUSIONS: Hedge language is ubiquitous in physician-surrogate communication during goals-of-care conferences in the ICU and can be used to introduce vagueness to statements in ways beyond expressing uncertainty. It is not known how hedge language impacts decision-making or clinician-surrogate interactions. This study prioritizes specific types of hedge language for future research based on their frequency and novelty.PMID:37358354 | DOI:10.1097/CCM.0000000000005974

Introduction The Pain in Older People with Frailty Study is a mixed-method, co-design study, which aims to develop the content, implementation strategies, service and professional guidance to support older adults with frailty to manage their pain. Methods and analysis The study has four phases: Phase 1, research evidence and information synthesis from randomised controlled trials of multicomponent pain management programmes and psychological therapies for community-dwelling older adults. Phase 2, qualitative interviews with 30 community-dwelling older adults (≥75 years) living with frailty and persistent pain, includin...

The Prevalence and Nature of Eating and Swallowing Problems in Adults with Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review
AbstractFibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and sleep disturbances. People with fibromyalgia can experience both autonomic and somatic disturbances, cognitive and mental health symptoms, and hypersensitivity to external stimuli. Fibromyalgia often co-occurs with a range of well-researched comorbidities (e.g., temporomandibular disorders, migraine, and irritable bowel syndrome). However, emerging research suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia also often experience eating, drinking, and swallowing problems (e.g., odynophagia, glossodynia, et...

Patients experiences with the application of medical adhesives to the skin: a qualitative systematic review protocol
Introduction Medical adhesives are adhesives used in medical devices to establish and maintain contact with the body over a period of time (usually by application to the skin) and are widely used in most care settings. Application of medical adhesives to the skin can lead to skin stripping, mild or severe allergic reactions and skin irritation that may manifest as redness, itching or rash. Adhesive-related skin injury can lead to infection, delayed wound healing and an increased risk of scarring. These injuries can cause severe discomfort and pain, and can affect the patient’s quality of life. A systematic review sum...

Rosena Allin-Khan  shares Labour ’ s vision for mental health
The final day of UNISON’s 2023 national delegate conference opened with a speech from shadow minister for mental health, Rosena Allin-Khan MP (pictured). Both a politician and a doctor, she opened her speech saying: “I am an NHS worker like so many of you in here today.” “I want to thank you for all that you do. All the hours that you put in, even though you’ve been going through your own, personal, daily struggles. You are an incredible, powerful force for good. “As a proud NHS doctor, when I’m able to, I put on my scrubs, I turn up and do my shifts at A&E.” Drawing on her experiences in the COVID-19 p...
