Abstracts From the Proceedings of the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM).
Abstract The mission of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) is to promote excellence in medical student internal medicine education. The organization represents course directors, site directors, and program administrators. CDIM is a member of the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine, a consortium of 5 academically focused specialty organizations representing departments of internal medicine and medical schools and teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada. How Medical Schools Can Encourage Students’ Interest in Family Medicine
The discipline of family medicine is essential to improving quality and reducing the cost of care in an effective health care system. Yet the slow growth of this field has not kept pace with national demand. In their study, Rodríguez and colleagues report on the influence of the social environment and academic discourses on medical students’ identification with family medicine in four countries—the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Spain. They conclude that these factors—the social environment and discursive activity within the medical school—influence students’ specialty choices. While the discourses in Canad...

Cognitive IT-systems for big data analysis in medicine.
CONCLUSIONS: We developed a prototype of cognitive IT system for drug prescription with the potential to analyze automatically the information about drugs effectiveness and safety on the basis of clinical practice experience and scientific data according to evidence levels and patients' personal characteristics. The system is based on the structured semantic network of medical knowledge from UMKB. PMID: 26639685 [PubMed - in process]

Untapped Potential: Performance of Procedural Skills in the Family Medicine Clerkship.
CONCLUSIONS: Though exposed to a wide range of procedures during the family medicine clerkship, students did not often repeat procedures. Creation of a core list of procedures and taking better advantage of rural placements may improve procedural skill training in the family medicine clerkship. PMID: 28633169 [PubMed - in process]

Initial Development and Validation of a Family Medicine Attitudes Questionnaire.
CONCLUSIONS: Development of a validated questionnaire assessing medical student attitudes toward family medicine is feasible. With further refinement, the Family Medicine Attitudes Questionnaire may be useful in evaluating the impact of curricular interventions on students' perceptions of family medicine, contributing to an evidence-based approach to recruitment of students to the specialty. Residents' Perspectives on Careers in Academic Medicine: Obstacles and Opportunities.
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study to identify barriers and disincentives to pursuing a career in academic medicine from the perspective of family medicine residents. There may be at least eight major obstacles, for which we summarize and consider potential interventions. More research is needed to understand why residents choose, or don't choose, academic careers. PMID: 29537463 [PubMed - in process]

Collaborating to Achieve the Optimal Family Medicine Workforce.
Abstract When the Family Medicine for America's Health (FMAHealth) Workforce Education and Development Tactic Team (WEDTT) began its work in December 2014, one of its charges from the FMAHealth Board was to increase family physician production to achieve the diverse primary care workforce the United States needs. The WEDTT created a multilevel interfunctional team to work on this priority initiative that included a focus on student, resident, and early-career physician involvement and leadership development. One major outcome was the adoption of a shared aim, known as 25 x 2030. Through a collaboration of the WEDT...

Factors That Influence Student Choice in Family Medicine A National Focus Group.
CONCLUSIONS: Many factors influence student choice of family medicine including preceptors, clinical exposures, and institutional support. These factors varied by institution and many were found to be different between top 10 and non-top 10 schools. Addressing these factors will help increase students' choice of family medicine and reduce the primary care shortage. PMID: 30736039 [PubMed - in process]

Computing for Medicine: Can We Prepare Medical Students for the Future?
Problem Technology can transform health care; future physicians need to keep pace to ensure optimal patient care. Because future doctors are poorly prepared in computer literacy, the authors designed a computer programming certificate course. This Innovation Report describes the course and findings from a qualitative study to understand the ways it prepares medical students to use computing science and technology in medicine. Approach The 14-month Computing for Medicine certificate course (C4M, offered beginning in February 2016), University of Toronto, is comprised of hands-on workshops to introduce programming accom...

Impact of the Introduction of the Clinical Science Mastery Series on Family Medicine NBME Subject Examination Performance.
CONCLUSIONS: Student scores improved with the introduction of the NBME CSMS family medicine self-assessment. These results support recommending student use of the CSMS as a study tool for their end-of-clerkship NBME subject examinations. PMID: 31509220 [PubMed - in process]
