Yes, the Federal Reserve Has a Diversity Problem
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen recently appeared before the Senate Banking Committee to deliver the Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to the Congress. A handful of Senators queried Yellen as to the lack of diversity among both the Fed staff and the members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Here, for example, is the exchange between Senator Warren and Yellen (paraphrased, as I heard it): Warren: Diversity is very important. Studies show gender diversity in leadership makes for stronger institutions. I’m not surprised there’s a stunning lack of diversity at our biggest financial institutions. The Fed’s l...

Codified Hashtags for Weather Warning on Twitter: an Italian Case Study
Conclusions This paper presents some findings about effective use of codified hashtags on Twitter during emergencies by analyzing a dataset of tweets based on three regional codified hashtags for weather warning in Italy. It is an exploratory work to assess if codified hashtags may contribute in aligning formal and informal sources of information during emergencies. In particular we wanted to investigate: the propagation of codified hashtags in the three different regions (Liguria, Tuscany and Piedmont); the responsive use of the hashtag by classes of users playing a role during emergencies; the hashtagging practices emerg...

Information retrieval, critical appraisal and knowledge of evidence ‐based dentistry among Finnish dental students
ConclusionMost students seem to lack knowledge of key methodological evidence‐based terms. The present curricula in dental schools fail to encourage the students to search and acquire knowledge wider than their patients themselves do. Universities have the responsibility to teach dentists various methods of critical appraisal to cope with scientific information.

Scholarly concentration programs and medical student research productivity: a  systematic review
DiscussionWhile few in number and often lacking in rigour, the studies included herein suggest that adequate administrative support, strong mentorship and tailored program characteristics are essential in facilitating student research productivity in scholarly concentration programs. Given the challenges inherent in medical education research, a  conceptual framework based on United Way’s approach may help program planners and educators address this gap in the evaluation of scholarly concentration programs.

How We Can Stop Earthquakes From Killing People Before They Even Hit
Ahmad Wani isn’t your typical Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Instead of inventing his company in a college dorm room or a Palo Alto garage, he conceived of his big idea while trapped in monsoon floods that rocked Pakistan and northern India. As Wani and his family spent a week waiting to be rescued in 2014, the then-Stanford University engineering student began to wonder whether first responders have enough information to decide where to focus their resources after a devastating event. Returning to the U.S. to another natural disaster — this time an earthquake in Napa Valley just north of San Fransisco — re...

LAPD Drones Threaten Privacy
Today, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) civilian police commission voted to approve proposed guidelines for a one-year unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) pilot program. According to the LAPD ’sguidelines, UAVs will not be equipped with lethal or nonlethal weapons and will only be deployed in a narrow set of circumstances. The guideline also requires officers to obtain a warrant before using a UAV “when required under the Fourth Amendment or other provision of the law.” This looks all well and good, except that the Fourth Amendment and California law provide little protection when it comes to aerial surveillance....

Tests for detecting strabismus in children aged 1 to 6 years in the community.
CONCLUSIONS: There is very limited data in the literature to ascertain the accuracy of tests for detecting strabismus in the community as performed by non-expert screeners. A large prospective study to compare methods would be required to determine which tests have the greatest accuracy. PMID: 29105728 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Which D.O. schools have structured and pre-planned 3rd/4th year rotations?
I understand that some Osteopathic schools make you go to other hospitals in different parts of the country and pretty much search for your own rotations. I understand that many (or all?) M.D. schools have their own hospital and let you do rotations there. Which D.O. schools are like this? Which schools have structured rotations (maybe around their own hospital) so you are not left to fend for yourself and to search/ask other sites and hope they accept your rotation? I'd imagine they are few?
