Factors associated with asthma expression in adolescents
Conclusions: Exposure to animals in and outside the home is associated with asthma symptoms, as is environmental tobacco smoke exposure. Families, health professionals, and administrators of health care facilities should take that into account in order to prevent asthma and reduce asthma morbidity.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores de risco associados aos sintomas relacionados à asma em adolescentes de 13 e 14 anos. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado com alunos matriculados em escolas públicas de Belo Horizonte (MG), selecionadas aleatoriamente, com a utilização dos questionários International Study of Asthma and...

Proposition of decision limits for serum lipids in Brazilian children aged one to 13 years.
CONCLUSION: The DL for the serum lipid levels defined in this study differed from those observed in the current Brazilian and North-American guidelines, especially because it differentiates between the age ranges. Using these DLs in clinical practice will certainly contribute to improve the diagnostic accuracy for dyslipidemia in this population group. PMID: 29526481 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Intra-abdominal fat measurement by ultrasonography: association with anthropometry and metabolic syndrome in adolescents.
CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography is a useful method to estimate intra-abdominal adipose tissue in adolescents, which is associated with the main factors related to obesity and metabolic syndrome. PMID: 29705051 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Waist-to-height ratio is as reliable as biochemical markers to discriminate pediatric insulin resistance.
CONCLUSION: The indicators provided similar discriminatory power for insulin resistance. However, taking into account the cost-benefit ratio, the authors suggest that waist-to-height ratio may be a useful tool to provide screening for insulin resistance in pediatric populations. Adiposity, inflammation and fat-soluble vitamins in adolescents.
CONCLUSION: Abdominal adiposity implies a higher risk of inflammation and causes different changes to the levels of fat-soluble vitamins according to gender. PMID: 29963989 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neck circumference cutoff points to identify excess android fat in Brazilian children.
CONCLUSIONS: Neck circumference is capable of identifying excess android fat in children and can be used in clinical practice and in population studies to determine central adiposity. The proposed cutoff points were satisfactory, but should be validated for other populations. PMID: 30731052 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Irritable bowel syndrome in Indonesian adolescents.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in adolescents was high, with bullying, female gender, age 14-16 years, constipation and diarrhea, and dietary consumption of soft drinks, coffee, and tea as risk factors. A significant association with intestinal inflammation was found. PMID: 32156535 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between interleukin-10 polymorphisms and CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ T cells in asthmatic children.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that moderate asthma is associated with a higher frequency of the T allele in the SNP rs3024491. In addition, the variant rs3024491 (TT) was associated with a reduction in IL-10 production and an increased percentage of Tregs cells, suggesting possible mechanisms that influence asthma severity. Fortification of condiments and seasonings with iron for preventing anaemia and improving health
CONCLUSIONS: We are uncertain whether consuming iron-fortified condiments/seasonings reduces anaemia, improves haemoglobin concentration, or improves ferritin concentration. It may reduce ID. Findings about ferritin should be interpreted with caution since its concentrations increase during inflammation. Consuming condiments/seasonings fortified with iron plus other micronutrients may reduce anaemia, and we are uncertain whether this will improve haemoglobin concentration or ferritin concentration. More studies are needed to determine the true effect of iron-fortified condiments/seasonings on preventing anaemia and improvi...
