Patients¿ expectations of variation in quality of care relates to their search for comparative performance information
Background: Choice of hospital based on comparative performance information (CPI) was introduced for Dutch healthcare consumers at least 5?years ago, but CPI use has not yet become commonplace. Our aim was to assess the role of patients? expectations regarding variation in the quality of hospital care in determining whether they search for CPI. Methods: A questionnaire (for a cross-sectional survey) was distributed to 475 orthopaedic patients in a consecutive sample, who underwent primary hip or knee replacement in a university, teaching, or community hospital between September 2009 and July 2010. Results: Of the 302 patie...

Utility of electrofusion for the femoral approach in vascular surgery: A randomized prospective study.
CONCLUSION: In our series, the use of electrofusion decreased the lymphatic complications after a femoral approach. However, the correction of this single parameter was not sufficient to improve the rate of healing at one month. PMID: 25591488 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The use of the early cannulation prosthetic graft (Acuseal™) for angioaccess for haemodialysis.
CONCLUSIONS: These results show that, while providing patency results that compare favourably to those published for other types of regular prosthetic accesses, the conduits are amenable to very early cannulation with few cannulation-related complications. This leads to a dramatic reduction in the need for temporary or tunnelled catheters. PMID: 26044892 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of the effectiveness of 3D vascular stereoscopic models in anatomy instruction for first year medical students
This study investigated whether 3D stereoscopic models created from computed tomographic angiography (CTA) data were efficacious teaching tools for the head and neck vascular anatomy. The test subjects were first year medical students at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The assessment tools included: anatomy knowledge tests (prelearning session knowledge test and postlearning session knowledge test), mental rotation tests (spatial ability; presession MRT and postsession MRT), and a satisfaction survey. Results were analyzed using a Wilcoxon rank‐sum test and linear regression analysis. A total of 39 first ye...

The undergraduate teaching of vascular surgery in Greek medical schools: theory and clinical practice.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the great need for diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases we recorded a limited VS training among the undergraduate Greek curricula. This heterogeneity does not ensure a high quality level of education in VS. Furthermore, emphasis on clinical skills' acquisition should be further encouraged. Use of 3D models of vascular rings and slings to improve resident education
ConclusionsThis study demonstrated a measurable gain in knowledge about vascular rings and pulmonary artery slings with the addition of 3D printed models of the defects. Future applications of this teaching modality could extend to other congenital cardiac lesions and different learners.

Renal Transplantation as a Platform for Teaching Residents Open Vascular Surgical Techniques: Effects on Early Graft Function
Over the past decade, increases in vascular fellowships and the use of endovascular technology have decreased the general surgery residents ′ exposure to open vascular surgery. We sought to elucidate whether renal transplant is a safe way to teach general surgery residents the essential tenants of vascular surgery without adversely affecting early patient outcomes.

[Vascular microsurgery course: 40 years at the Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre (ISSSTE) and 33 years at the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM]. Cir Cir. 2018;86(2):196-203 Authors: Padilla L, Argüero R, Silvio MD, López-Gutiérrez J, Landero T, García J, Carranza P Abstract On June 1977, "Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre," in Mexico City, implemented the first vascular microsurgery course. The aim was to develop clinical applications of microsurgery focus on surgical specialties, due to the necessity to develop microsurgical skills. On August 1964 we started the program course at the s...

Telemedicine curriculum in undergraduate medical education: a systematic search and review
AbstractThe number of patient-doctor appointments carried out using telemedicine has surpassed in-person appointments. In spite of this, it is unclear that telemedicine curricula in undergraduate medical education reflect the real importance by means of the effectiveness of these approaches. We aimed to systematically search and review the studies that are on undergraduate telemedicine curricula. We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus using the keywords such as telemedicine, medical education, and curriculum. Our search was limited to publication dates between January 1, 2000, and February 1, 2020. We elicited ...

Search inside yourself: investigating the effects of a widely adopted mindfulness-at-work development program
Norian A. Caporale-Berkowitz, Brittany P. Boyer, Christopher J. Lyddy, Darren J. Good, Aaron B. Rochlen, Michael C. Parent International Journal of Workplace Health Management, Vol. 14, No. 6, pp.593-604 Workplace mindfulness training has many benefits, but designing programs to reach a wide audience effectively and efficiently remains a challenge. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of a widely adopted workplace mindfulness program on the mindfulness, active listening skill, emotional intelligence, and burnout of employees in a large, multinational internet company. The study sample in...

Simulation-based training to teach open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair to surgical residents requires dedicated faculty instruction
Objective: We assessed the impact of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)-specific simulation training on resident performance in simulated open AAA repair (SOAAAR) and determined whether simulation training required dedicated faculty instruction. Methods: We randomized 18 residents (postgraduate years 3-5) to an AAA simulation course consisting of two mandatory practice sessions proctored either by a surgical skills lab coordinator (Group A, n = 8) or by a vascular surgery faculty instructor (Group B, n = 10). All residents received a detailed manual and video demonstrating the technique of open AAA repair. Using a validated ...

Fresh frozen cadaver workshops for advanced vascular surgical training
ConclusionsThe fresh frozen cadaver is an excellent teaching model highly representative of the living open surgical scenario where advanced trainees and newly qualified consultants can improve their operative confidence and consequently patient safety in vascular surgery. An efficient fresh frozen cadaver teaching programme can benefit many health professionals simultaneously maximizing the use of donated human tissue.

Impact of hospital market competition on endovascular aneurysm repair adoption and outcomes
Objective: The share of total abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repairs performed by endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) increased rapidly from 32% in 2001 to 65% in 2006 with considerable variation between states. We hypothesized that hospitals in competitive markets were early EVAR adopters and had improved AAA repair outcomes. Methods: Nationwide Inpatient Sample and linked Hospital Market Structure (HMS) data was queried for patients who underwent repair for nonruptured AAA in 2003. In HMS, the Herfindahl Hirschman Index (HHI, range 0-1) is a validated and widely accepted economic measure of competition. Hospital markets...
