Accessing The Axillary Vein
This is a guest post by Jack LeDonne (@jackledonnemd), Tom Petry and Peter Carr (@paedarg) The Axillary Vein (AXV) has  compelling advantages over other access sites for Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) insertion (namely the Internal Jugular Vein (IJV), Subclavian Vein (SCV) and the Femoral Vein). In particular, the AXV approach helps avoid iatrogenic complications during and after CVAD insertion. The AXV traverses from the arm to the thorax in the infraclavicular fossa, where there is considerably less motion compared to the neck or the groin. Dressing maintenance is optimized at this site, reducing the risk of Cathe...

Disparities in Stroke Type and Vascular Risk Factors Between 2 Hispanic Populations in Miami and Mexico City
Conclusions: We found significant differences in the frequency of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and atrial fibrillation in Miami Hispanics and Mexican stroke patients, highlighting the heterogeneity of the Hispanic ethnic group. Future studies are needed to clarify the relative contribution of genetic and environmental disparities amongst Mexican and Caribbean Hispanic stroke patients.

Impact of hospital market competition on endovascular aneurysm repair adoption and outcomes
Objective: The share of total abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repairs performed by endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) increased rapidly from 32% in 2001 to 65% in 2006 with considerable variation between states. We hypothesized that hospitals in competitive markets were early EVAR adopters and had improved AAA repair outcomes. Methods: Nationwide Inpatient Sample and linked Hospital Market Structure (HMS) data was queried for patients who underwent repair for nonruptured AAA in 2003. In HMS, the Herfindahl Hirschman Index (HHI, range 0-1) is a validated and widely accepted economic measure of competition. Hospital markets...

Evaluation of standard magnetic resonance characteristics used to differentiate neoplastic, inflammatory, and vascular brain lesions in dogs
Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics are commonly used to help predict intracranial disease categories in dogs, however, few large studies have objectively evaluated these characteristics. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate MR characteristics that have been used to differentiate neoplastic, inflammatory, and vascular intracranial diseases in a large, multi‐institutional population of dogs. Medical records from three veterinary teaching hospitals were searched over a 6‐year period for dogs that had diagnostic quality brain MR scans and histologically confirmed intracranial disease. Three ...

Prognostic Significance of an Elevated Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio in the Amputation-free Survival of Patients with Chronic Critical Limb Ischemia
Conclusions: Elevated NLR predicts a worse AFS in patients undergoing infrainguinal vascular revascularization with chronic CLI, suggesting that the NLR conveys powerful prognostic information that is independent of other conventional clinical risk factors.

Clinical access assessment.
CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis indicates that regular monitoring should be the backbone of any vascular access stenosis screening program (possibly associated with Qa and sVPR surveillance for fistulas), and PE should be part of every teaching program for caregivers involved in hemodialysis. 2085897 Effetctivness of Teaching Vascular Anatomy with Ultrasound for Undergraduate Nursing Students
Ultrasound has been used gradually and widely in medical education for the past several years. With interest in and need for education in ultrasound, a number of medical schools have recently developed ultrasound curricula for undergraduate medical education. We began expansion of ultrasound not only to medical school but school of nursing. As a pilot for undergraduate nursing education, we conducted a hands-on session for on vascular anatomy with ultrasound for the second degree students of Bachelor of Science of Nursing to see whether incorporating ultrasound into vascular anatomy class can improve students’ learning experiences.

Genetic polymorphisms of lipid metabolism gene SAR1 homolog B and the risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
CONCLUSION: SAR1B polymorphisms were associated with AD risk; results were not significant after correction for multiple tests. Simultaneous screening using SAR1B rs11948613 and ApoE ε4 status offered a better sensitivity for AD screening. PMID: 25703997 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Acquired uterine vascular abnormalities associated with persistent human chorionic gonadotropin: Experience at a Korean teaching hospital
The aim of this study was to describe our experience with the diagnosis and management of acquired uterine vascular abnormalities associated with persistent human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Through this case series, we sought to establish our protocol for the treatment and follow-up of uterine vascular lesions associated with persistent hCG.

A comparison of efficacy of endovascular versus surgical repair for the treatment of arteriovenous fistula stenosis in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, PTA was found to be just a temporary solution for fistula thrombosis, whereas fistula reconstruction surgery is inexpensive and improves survival time. Therefore, dialysis units should establish an appropriate standard of care to avoid over-reliance on PTA in order to reduce the fistula failure rate, improve the dialysis efficacy, and reduce the psychological stress in patients, as well as to reduce the maintenance costs and rationalize the medical expenses. A Vascular Anastomosis Simulation Can Provide a Safe and Effective Environment for Resident Skills Development
Vascular anastomoses are complex surgical procedures, performed in time-sensitive circumstances, making intraoperative teaching more challenging. We sought to evaluate whether a simple, inexpensive, vascular anastomosis simulation was an effective environment to develop resident skills.

Effect of tumescent anesthesia and patient positioning on laser tip junctional distance during endovenous laser ablation
Conclusions This study has demonstrated the effect of tumescence infiltration and Trendelenburg positioning on laser tip placement, and thus a final junctional measurement before activation of the laser is recommended to maintain a safe and optimal junctional distance.

Modified Eversion Carotid Endarterectomy: A 14-Year Experience in a Tertiary Teaching University Hospital in Brazil (South America)
Carotid endarterectomy is one of the most performed vascular procedures. Since the first reports in the late 1950s, the conventional open and the eversion techniques are the popularized ones. A short extraction or partial eversion technique has been previously described and recently has been subjected to case series reports. The aim of the study was to present the experience of a teaching hospital with modified or partial eversion endarterectomy compared with the experience with conventional open procedure performed exclusively by training vascular surgeons.
