Assessing the effect of unilateral cerebral revascularisation on the vascular reactivity of the non-intervened hemisphere: a retrospective observational study
Conclusions Not only does CVR improve in the hemisphere ipsilateral to a flow restoration procedure, but it also improves in the non-intervened hemisphere. This highlights the potential of CVR mapping for staging and evaluating surgical interventions.

Simulation in Vascular Access Surgery.
Authors: Widmer MK, Davidson I, Widmer LW, Schmidli J, Wyss TR Abstract In the last years, simulation training has become widespread in different areas of medicine due to social expectations, political accountability and professional regulation. Different types of simulators allow to improve knowledge, skills, communication and team behavior. Simulation sessions have been proven to shorten the learning curve and allow education in a safe environment. Patients on dialysis are an expanding group. They often suffer from several comorbidities and need complex surgical procedures with regard to their dialysis access. Th...

Genetic polymorphisms of lipid metabolism gene SAR1 homolog B and the risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia
Conclusion SAR1B polymorphisms were associated with AD risk; results were not significant after correction for multiple tests. Simultaneous screening using SAR1B rs11948613 and ApoE ε4 status offered a better sensitivity for AD screening.

3:30 PM Abstract No. 6 National trends and outcomes of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt creation
Conclusion National TIPS inpatient mortality has decreased since 2003. Complication rates vary by underlying diagnosis as well as baseline patient demographics and comorbidities. Our predictive models for post-TIPS hospital mortality and length of stay may aide clinicians in assessing pre-procedure risk.

Stereoscopic vascular models of the head and neck: A computed tomography angiography visualization
Computer‐assisted 3D models are used in some medical and allied health science schools; however, they are often limited to online use and 2D flat screen‐based imaging. Few schools take advantage of 3D stereoscopic learning tools in anatomy education and clinically relevant anatomical variations when teaching anatomy. A new approach to teaching anatomy includes use of computed tomography angiography (CTA) images of the head and neck to create clinically relevant 3D stereoscopic virtual models. These high resolution images of the arteries can be used in unique and innovative ways to create 3D virtual models of the vascul...

The Effect of Stress on Task Acquisition in a Simulated Open Aortic Aneurysm Model
This study evaluated high levels of teaching stress compared with a nonstressful environment and its effects on standardized performance measures on an open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) model using validated psychological and hemodynamic parameters.

Using Ultrasound to Enhance Medical Students' Femoral Vascular Physical Examination Skills
Conclusions— The addition of ultrasound teaching to traditional physical examination instruction enhanced medical student competency and confidence with the femoral vascular examination. However, understanding of anatomy may require emphasis on precourse didactic material, but further study is required.

Clinical Evaluation of an Extended Dwell Peripheral IV in a Level 1 Trauma Center
The Vascular Access Team (VAT) at this 450 bed county teaching facility with Level 1 Trauma Center places approximately 800 peripheral IVs (PIV) per month. Many are difficult access patients with poor outcomes using conventional longer catheters with ultrasound guidance. There is a critical need for a peripheral device that could offer an extended dwell experience for the patient population served.

Training in dialysis access - charting future success.
CONCLUSIONS: The future dialysis access training must also accommodate learners with diverse individual backgrounds, and different levels of professional (skill) development. To be effective and accessible, a variety of educational system, for example on site or web based is needed. Collaborative initiatives for global dialysis access training are currently underway. Teaching NeuroImages: When alopecia and disk herniations meet vascular leukoencephalopathy: CARASIL
A 26-year-old Turkish patient presented with progressive spastic gait since age 20 years and premature alopecia. Cerebral and spinal MRI revealed diffuse supra- and infratentorial leukoencephalopathy with recurrent subclinical subcortical infarcts and multiple disk herniations with cervical myelopathy (figure). Targeted panel-sequencing revealed a novel homozygous splice site mutation (c.1005+1G>T; p.?) in HTRA1, which is known to cause CARASIL (cerebral autosomal-recessive arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy),1 mostly described in Asians so far.

Science And Technology Combine In Search For Underwater Resting Place Of WWII MIAs
The remains of American airmen missing in action since 1944, along with wreckage from their plane, have been located on the ocean floor off the Pacific island republic of Palau. Members of Project RECOVER, a collaborative effort to seek out the final resting places of World War II armed forces personnel, discovered the U.S. Navy TBM-1C Avenger torpedo bomber in March. However, it took a couple of months to secure the location and collect DNA samples, so they felt it was appropriate to announce the new WWII crash site as Memorial Day weekend approached. "It was a way of saying that we do care, that Memorial Day is...

Impact of hospital type and treatment on long-term survival among patients with FIGO Stage IIIC epithelial ovarian cancer: follow-up through two recurrences and three treatment lines in search for predictors for survival.
Authors: Szczesny W, Vistad I, Kaern J, Nakling J, Tropé C, Paulsen T Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hospital type determined at primary treatment and find possible predictors of survival in a cohort of patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) who recurred twice and received three lines of treatment during eight-year follow-up. Using the Norwegian Cancer Registry, the authors identified 174 women with FIGO Stage IIIC EOC diagnosed in 2002. First-line treatment consisted of up-front debulking surgery and chemotherapy, received in either a teaching hospital (TH, n =...
