Vascular Cures Wylie Scholar Program
Vascular Cures' Wylie Scholar Program provides financial assistance to outstanding surgeons at the early stage of their careers, to help them develop as academic vascular surgeon-scientists. Vascular Cures has advanced breakthrough research since 1982. We've established a group of 16 surgeon-scientists at 13 institutions around the country who are transforming patient care. Vascular Cures' initial research investment of $8 million has enabled another $42 million in funding —producing $50 million for research. The Wylie Scholar Program has created a network of talented academic surgeons, many of who...

Radiation dose to the interventionalist is directly affected by the operating position.
In conclusion, there is considerable variation in radiation absorption due to the position of the interventionalist relative to the II and other operators. Although positioning of the operator next to the trainee may make it more difficult to assist and teach technical maneuvers, it greatly minimizes radiation exposure to the interventionalist. Assessment of surgical residents in a vascular anastomosis laboratory
The objective metrics included volume leakage after saline perfusion (leak) and the time needed to complete the anastomosis. Penalty points were assigned for broken sutures, air knots, locking sutures, and failure to maintain an outside-in to inside-out technique. The leak, time, and penalties before and after training were compared. Results: The mean leak was 70.4 ± 13.7 mL and the mean completion time was 18.7 ± 3 min for the pretraining group versus 45.3 ± 10.6 mL (P

Real-Time Doppler-Based Arterial Vascular Impedance and Peripheral Pressure-Flow Loops: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: Real-time arterial vascular impedance and peripheral pressure-volume loops can be determined using available monitoring devices. Technical feasibility of this technology in patients is a crucial first step to permit meaningful evaluation of the clinical value of this approach for accurate determination of complex hemodynamic indices and, eventually, improvement of outcomes.

Sara—the Search and Rescue Dog—and her Game of Fetch
Editor’s note: Jana Sweeny is the American Red Cross’s Director of International Communications. She and her team are traveling around Colombia this week, visiting communities made safer by the Red Cross.   As we walk into the Colombian Red Cross training center in Pereira, a yellow lab comes bouncing up, waving her tail enthusiastically. The ball in her mouth turns out to be a lime and she is ready to play fetch. Because I can never say no to a dog, I begin a game of “fetch the lime” with her. It turns out that Sara isn’t just a fun companion–she is a retired search and rescue dog.  The Colo...

An affordable and easily constructed model for training in ultrasound-guided vascular access.
CONCLUSIONS: Using this method, simple and inexpensive phantoms can be created. These are ideal for use in training for ultrasound-guided vascular access. Links to videos describing the phantom construction process, their appearance and the teaching techniques utilised by the authors are found in the text. Teaching medical students ultrasound-guided vascular access - which learning method is best?
CONCLUSIONS: The group receiving traditional face-to-face teaching on ultrasound-guided vascular access, performed significantly better than those not receiving education. As the number of ultrasound machines in clinical areas increases, it is important that education programs to support their safe and appropriate use are developed. Vascular science: A glimpse into the future
Vascular surgery continues to be an exciting and vibrant specialty. At the core of any specialty is the scientific foundations of its knowledge basis; this set of principles remains at the heart of patient care, what we teach our trainees and test them on, and what we place as the opening chapters of our specialty's major textbooks. At the heart of Vascular surgery's core is basic science, the fundamental principles that help us understand the physiology and pathophysiology of vascular disease. Each of the articles in this Journal of Vascular Surgery supplement is written to give the reader a glimpse into some of the excit...

The influence of a Vascular Surgery Hospitalist program on physician and patient satisfaction, resident education, and resource utilization
A number of surgery practice models have been developed to address general and trauma surgeon workforce shortages and on-call issues and to improve surgeon satisfaction. These include the creation of acute or urgent care surgery services and “surgical hospitalist” programs. To date, no practice models corresponding to those developed for general and trauma surgeons have been proposed to address these same issues among vascular surgeons or other surgical subspecialists. In 2003, our practice established a Vascular Surgery Hospitalist program. Since its inception nearly a decade ago, it has undergone several modification...

The evaluation of the implementation of the vascular preventative bundle and development of suggested interventions for improvement and sustainability
Postoperative infections can complicate patient care and increase health care costs. A vascular preventative bundle was implemented at a large teaching/research intensive hospital to decrease surgical site infections (SSIs) with vascular surgery patients. The aim of this study was to measure fidelity to the bundle and determine if implementation of the vascular SSI bundle reduced the rate of SSIs. Three periods of data were collected, and they are identified as preimplementation (period 1), early implementation (period 2), and postimplementation (period 3).
