On the road again - thanks to collaborative cancer care
In a matter of months, Bill McDermott went from having abdominal pain and learning he had lymphoma to being told it was time for hospice care. What his family did next would steer him in an entirely different direction.  Although he doesn't remember all of the details, Bill McDermott says he began having abdominal issues and pain in mid-2021. He went in for some tests at a local hospital, where he got a diagnosis…

Chest discomfort and a dilated right ventricle. What ' s going on?
Written by Magnus Nossen MD, peer reviewed and edits by Smith, Meyers, GrauerA 60 something previously healthy female smoker sought medical attention after 2-3 days of intermittent chest discomfort. The chest discomfort was described as sharp. Episodes lasting 5-30 minutes. On the day of presentation she experienced another episode of chest discomfort accompanied by vomiting and throat pain. Machine learning and EEG can classify passive viewing of discrete categories of visual stimuli but not the observation of pain
Previous studies have demonstrated the potential of machine learning (ML) in classifying physical pain from non-pain states using electroencephalographic (EEG) data. However, the application of ML to EEG data ...

The impact of AirSeal ® on complications and pain management during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy: a single-tertiary center study
ConclusionRARP using AirSeal® is associated with shorter operative times, shorter length of hospital stays, lower odds of CVD  >  2 complications, and lower odds of opioid use with respect to non-AirSeal® RARP. The efficacy and cost effectiveness of using the AirSeal® system during RARP should be further studied and evaluated by clinical trials.

Rheumatological patients ’ knowledge of, beliefs about, and practices in using phytotherapy: an exploratory study
In this study, we aimed to examine the knowledge of, beliefs about, and practices of using phytotherapy in patients who use biologics due to rheumatological disease. In the first part of the questionnaire, there are 11 questions, including the demographic data of the person, and in the second part, there are 17 questions that aim to learn the level of knowledge about phytotherapy and the use of phytopharmaceuticals. The questionnaire was administered face-to-face to patients with rheumatology using biological therapy who gave consent to participate. A total of 100 patients who were followed up with biological therapy were ...

Pain in Animals Workshop 2023 (Day 2)
Annually millions of people and animals suffer from chronic and acute pain. The challenge is to accurately measure this pain in order to develop analgesics for treatment. Along with the welfare concerns of animals and people being in pain, there is the need to develop new and effective analgesic options that may offer alternatives to opioids. The Pain in Animals Workshop (PAW) meetings are held every other year in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), bringing key stakeholders together to better understand pain in animals and humans. The 2-day workshop will be held on Sept 26-27th and is open to academi...

Judge for yourself the management of this patient with " NSTEMI, multivessel disease "
DISCUSSION:The administration of opioid analgesia prior to cath in patients with concern for ACS is associated with longer door-to-balloon times, and greater peak troponin levels. The rate of Occlusion MI in those who received pre-cath opioids was double the rate of those without pre-cath opioids, and STEMI(-) OMI patients who received pre-cath opioids waited 10 hours on average longer to get cath than those who did not received opioids. These results add support to our hypothesis that a major mechanism of harm caused by opioid medications in ACS patients involves delays to the cath lab for patients with STEMI(-) OMI.=====...

Comparison of pulsed field ablation and cryoballoon ablation for pulmonary vein isolation
ConclusionThe new PFA technology is equally effective and safe as compared to CB for complete PVI with potentially shorter procedure time and significantly less contrast medium. However, AF recurrence rates after PFA PVI seem to be comparable to CB PVI.

Does feeling pain help prepare future clinicians to treat pain? A qualitative exploration of a novel experiential approach to teaching health professional students about pain
CONCLUSION: Integrating first-hand pain experiences within entry-level physiotherapy training appears to have novel value in helping students understand pain subjectivity. Future research should use robust and controlled designs to explore how this novel approach can be used to facilitate further understanding and empathy within clinical interactions with people living with pain.PMID:37682624 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2023.2254367

50 year-old in remote rural community with chest pain and ‘normal’ ECG
Submitted by anonymous, edited by Jesse McLarenThe first person " I " and " me " is this anonymous sender. A 50 year old presented to the emergency department of a remote rural community (where the nearest cath lab is a plane ride away) with one hour of mild chest pain radiating to the back and jaw, and an ECG labeled ‘normal’ by the computer interpretation. What do you think, and how would you manage the patient? There ’s normal sinus rhythm, normal conduction, normal axis, normal R wave progression and normal voltages. There’s clear T wave inversion in III/aVF, which is reciprocal to subtle ST elevation and h...

Are advanced procedures critical during fellowship year
I know this question has been asked and it seems split that ~75% would argue "focus BB, learning flouroscopy and the rest will come", and ~25% would argue something along the lines of "advanced are the future and exposure is critical during fellowship and you'll get the BB anywhere". My question is more specifically if I was to go to a primarily BB focused fellowship with low volume advanced, assuming I would go to training courses for the advanced procedures I want to incorporate, would I...
