The Ultrashort Mental Health Screening Tool Is a Valid and Reliable Measure With Added Value to Support Decision-making
CONCLUSION: Our ultrashort, valid, and reliable screening tool for pain catastrophizing, psychologic distress, and illness perception can be used before clinician consultation and may serve as a conversation starter, an expectation management tool, or a decision support tool. The clinical utility of the screening tool is that it can indicate that further testing is warranted, guide a clinician when considering a consultation with a mental health specialist, or support a clinician in choosing between more invasive and less invasive treatments. Future studies could investigate how the tool can be used optimally and whether u...

InternalBrace for Intercarpal Ligament Reconstruction
Scapholunate and lunotriquetral instability are common causes of chronic, debilitating wrist pain and functional impairment. In the setting of subacute or chronic injuries with predynamic or dynamic instability, the ideal surgical approach remains unclear. In January 2020 the authors started enrolling patients with predynamic and dynamic instability in an Institutional Review Board –approved prospective study, aimed at meticulously studying outcomes using the all-dorsal InternalBrace reconstruction technique. The all-dorsal technique described herein is straightforward, efficient, and easy to learn, with early outcomes e...

Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training in Mental Health: A Survey of Program Directors
CONCLUSIONS: Beyond a few commonly identified and taught key topics, there is variability in clinical and didactic exposure to mental health training among HPM fellowships. Standardizing key learning objectives and guiding educators in how to achieve these objectives could improve the preparedness of the physician workforce in HPM to meet the mental health needs of patients with serious illness.PMID:37442531 | DOI:10.1016/j.jpainsymman.2023.06.015

Machine learning ‐based identification and related features of depression in patients with diabetes mellitus based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey: A cross-sectional study
by Ji-Yoon Lee, Doyeon Won, Kiheon Lee Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are twice as likely as nondiabetic individuals to develop depression, which is a prevalent but often undiagnosed psychiatric comorbidity. Patients with DM who are depressed have poor glycemic control, worse quality of life, increased risk of diabetic complicati ons, and higher mortality rate. The present study aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models that identify depression in patients with DM, determine the best performing model by evaluating multiple ML algorithms, and investigate features related to depression. We developed six ML models,...

Electronic Decision Support for Deprescribing in Patients on Hemodialysis: Clinical Research Protocol for a Prospective, Controlled, Quality Improvement Study
CONCLUSIONS: Electronic decision support can facilitate deprescribing for the clinical team by providing a nudge reminder, decreasing the time it takes to review and effectuate guideline recommendations, and by lowering the barrier of when and how to taper. Guidelines for deprescribing in the dialysis population have recently been published and incorporated into the MedSafer software. To our knowledge, this will be the first study to examine the efficacy of pairing these guidelines with MedRecs by leveraging electronic decision support in the outpatient dialysis population.TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered on C...

Humans will trade pain for useless information
This study gives us a vivid new window to understand how we motivate ourselves to seek information about our future,” says Ethan Bromberg-Martin, a neuroscientist at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis who wasn’t involved in the study. Between 2009 and 2015, Bromberg-Martin conducted a set of experiments involving macaque monkeys. He showed that monkeys who received rewards in return for performing a computer-based task in a laboratory were willing to sacrifice part of their reward payout (varying amounts of water) to learn what their future rewards would be—even though doing so made no dif...

How Automation Tech is Fixing Healthcare ’s Broken Hiring Pipeline
The following is a guest article by Dr. Kit Latham, Co-Founder and CEO at Credentially Workforce burnout is a major problem across the US healthcare system, with approximately one in three physicians experiencing burnout at any given time, according to research. As a doctor, I’ve seen first-hand how the pressure that it places on clinicians and administrative teams can have serious knock-on impacts on organizational outcomes and patient safety. Much has already been written about how clinician workload and patient demand can be safely reduced. But I believe that, because burnout is fundamentally a capacity problem, the f...

What we can learn about rehab from my dog
Miss Molly May is my adorable, high energy, full-sized labradoodle. She’s five years old, and has just undergone a tibial plateau leveling osteotomy for her right rear knee. Essentially she damaged the dog equivalent of her cruciate ligament because she’s an idiot. Well, she’s a dog who adores chasing the B-A-L-L and the F-R-I-S-B-E-E and any random S-T-I-C-K at full speed, turning really fast to catch it before anyone else gets to it. Five weeks ago she was seen by our local general practice vet, referred to animal physio (click) and comprehensively examined there, then referred to the Animal Orth...

Psychedelic Science 2023 – Full Conference Review
In June I attended the Psychedelic Science 2023 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. We were told this was the largest psychedelic-related gathering in the history of the planet, attracting about 12,000 attendees and 500 speakers. In this post I’ll share about my experiences and insights from the conference. Here’s a pic from inside the Bellco Theater where the main keynotes were held. The Colorado Convention Center is sizable, and sessions were spread across many different rooms. Even though I didn’t do extra exercise on this trip, I was typically hitting about 1000 calories ...
