Comment on “Clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma: institutional experience of 42 cases”
We read the article “Clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma: institutional experience of 42 cases” by Wu et al.1 with great interest. The authors have usefully managed to gather a relatively large number of patients together with this rare diagnosis of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma. We would like to ask for some clarification. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Comparison of the success rate and marginal bone loss of implants placed simultaneously with either bone expansion or ridge splitting in maxillary sites: a prospective non-randomized study
This study was performed to compare the amount of marginal bone loss (MBL) and the success rate of implants placed following maxillary ridge expansion with two surgical techniques. A non-randomized prospective study was designed. The patients underwent either bone expansion or ridge splitting, and simultaneous implant placement. The implants were loaded according to the delayed loading protocol with single crowns. Each study group included 35 implants placed in 31 patients. One year after loading, the implant success rate was 100  % in both groups. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Three-dimensional quantification of soft tissue changes and its relationship to skeletal changes after Le Fort III, monobloc, and facial bipartition in syndromic craniosynostosis
To determine the effect of midface surgery on soft tissue changes and their relationship to hard tissue changes in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis. A retrospective analysis of patients who had undergone Le Fort III (LFIII), monobloc (MB), or facial bipartition (FB) was conducted. A 3D soft tissue mesh was generated from the preoperative scan and registered to the postoperative scan, after which the advancement was visualised. A total of 68 patients were included: 28 had undergone LFIII, 27 MB, and 13 FB. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Minimally invasive sagittal osteotomy —technical note
This article describes a novel minimally invasive technique for bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) that aims to reduce surgical trauma while maintaining bone overlap and rigid internal fixation for proper consolidation of the bone segments. The technique involves a small vestibular mucoperiosteal incision made on the lateral aspect of the mandible between the first and second molars, enabling a standard ramus split, surgical segment movement, and miniplate fixation. A retrospective evaluation of 67 consecutive patients who underwent BSSO using this protocol showed favorable split of the mandible with no unfavorable ...

Arthrocentesis versus occlusal coverage splints in the management of disc displacement without reduction: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR) can cause pain and limitations in mouth opening, with a significant impact on function. The optimal management strategy for DDwoR is unclear. Treatments include conservative management such as mandibular manipulation, occlusal splints, and patient education/self-management, as well as arthrocentesis, which is a minimally invasive procedure. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to ascertain whether there is a role for arthrocentesis in the management of DDwoR. Stability of proximal mandibular anatomical structures following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy
The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of the proximal mandibular reference structures that have been proposed in the literature for superimposition. Forty proximal mandibular segments of 20 patients who underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) for advancement were reconstructed from a pair of pre- and postoperative (2 years) cone beam computed tomography scans, and spatially divided into the mandibular condyle, the coronoid process, and 20 mandibular ramus regions. To assess the stability of the anatomical regions, the volumetric and surface discrepancy between the superimposed pre- and postoper...

The ‘D–M–C’ strategy for conventional ameloblastoma of the mandible: a retrospective study
The purpose of this multicentre study was to evaluate the efficacy of the ‘dredging–marsupialization–curettage’ (D–M–C) strategy in the treatment of conventional intraosseous ameloblastoma of the mandible. A total of 31 patients from three institutions, who had a pathological diagnosis of conventional ameloblastoma of the mandible, were treated with the D–M– C strategy. The surgical protocol comprised a dredging and marsupialization (D–M) step, with additional D–M steps as required. The patients then underwent curettage (C) once an obvious effect of the D–M step had been achieved during follow-up. (So...
