Late nephrologist referral and mortality assotiation in dialytic patients.
CONCLUSION: The referral timing was predominantly late. The late referral was associated with a greater mortality. Other variables associated with a greater mortality were age of 70 or more, presence of diabetes and the use of catheter by the dialysis onset. PMID: 25923748 [PubMed - in process]

Effect of renal revascularization on the development of renal dysfunction in atherosclerotic ischemic nephropathy.
Authors: Hagemann R, Silva Vdos S, Franco RJ, Barretti P, Martin LC Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a progressive loss of renal function and its main causes are hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Among the causes of hypertension is atherosclerotic renal disease (ARD). The development of CKD in patients with ARD appears to be due not only to the involvement of the main renal arteries, but also of the renal microcirculation, which may explain the fact that the success of the procedure does not guarantee an improvement in the progression of CKD. To date there is no evidence of benefit of ang...

BK polyomavirus in kidney transplant recipients: screening, monitoring and clinical management.
Authors: Varella RB, Almeida JR, Lopes Pde F, Matos JP, Menezes P, Lugon JR Abstract BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a causal agent of nephropathy, ureteral stenosis and hemorrhagic cystitis in kidney transplant recipients, and is considered an important emerging disease in transplantation. Regular screening for BKPyV reactivation mainly during the first 2 years posttransplant, with subsequent pre-emptive reduction of immunosuppression is considered the best option to avoid disease progression, since successful clearance or reduction of viremia is achieved in the vast majority of patients within 6 months. The use of dru...

Tuberculosis in renal transplant patients: the experience of a single center in Medellín-Colombia, 2005-2013.
CONCLUSION: Tuberculosis in the renal transplant population studied caused diverse nonspecific symptoms. Pulmonary and disseminated tuberculosis were the most frequent forms and required prolonged treatment. Antituberculosis medications had a high toxicity and mortality. This infection must be considered when patients present with a febrile syndrome of unknown origin, especially during the first year after renal transplant. PMID: 25517281 [PubMed - in process]
