Total body water reduction in subjects with chronic kidney disease on peritoneal dialysis is associated with a better hypertension control.
CONCLUSION: Reduction of the volemia of patients on peritoneal dialysis, with no signs of hypervolemia, was associated with a better blood pressure control and with a decrease of the final systolic left ventricular diameter. PMID: 25517277 [PubMed - in process]

Inverse association between serum creatinine and mortality in acute kidney injury.
CONCLUSION: In a cohort of septic AKI, oliguria and serum urea were the main indications for dialysis. We also described an inverse association between serum creatinine and mortality. Potential explanations for this finding include: delay in diagnosis, fluid overload with hemodilution of serum creatinine or poor nutritional status. This finding may also help to explain the low discriminative power of general severity scores - that assign higher risks to higher creatinine levels - in septic AKI patients. Impact of an interdisciplinary approach in children and adolescents with lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD).
CONCLUSION: This study showed that treatment of LUTD in children must be individualized, and requires constant monitoring of clinical, laboratory and imaging to minimize the risk of kidney damage. PMID: 25517273 [PubMed - in process]

Computerized tomography contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) among adult inpatients.
CONCLUSION: Incidence of CIN varies according to the population. Diabetes mellitus, heart failure and renal failure were independent risk factors for the development of CT-associated CIN. Further studies are needed to better understand and treat CT-associated CIN. PMID: 25517272 [PubMed - in process]

Evaluation of food intake and excretion of metabolites in nephrolithiasis.
CONCLUSION: It was found in both groups a high prevalence of overweight patients, a high intake of oxalate and sodium, in addition to inadequate intakes of calcium, potassium and vitamin C. The NE group showed high protein intake and increased excretion of citrate. PMID: 25517271 [PubMed - in process]

A case of renal recovery in atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome treated with eculizumab.
Authors: Farias JS, Cunha JP, Lagana CC, Gallucci MC, Chula DC, Soares MF, Nascimento MM Abstract Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS) is a rare, life-threatening disease that can occur at any age and be sporadic or familial. aHUS is caused by an uncontrolled activation of the complement system. Plasma Exchange (PE) has been the standard treatment for years with poor results, leading approximately 40% of patients to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or death during the first clinical manifestation. Eculizumab, an humanized monoclonal antibody directed against complement component C5, has emerged in the last few y...

Pathogenesis and treatment of glomerulonephritis-an update.
Authors: Couser WG Abstract This review updates current concepts of the genetic risk factors, etiologic events, nephtitogenic responses and treatment of the major immunologically mediated types of glomerulonephritis (GN). These include post-infectious GN, IgA nephropathy, anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibody disease, ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) and lupus nephritis. Although the etiology(s) of most GNs remain undefined, many are now believed to be initiated by environmental insults, particularly infectious processes, that trigger host responses in genetically susceptible individuals which lead to GN...
