Mental disorders in children and adolescents with lower urinary tract dysfunction.
Authors: Marciano RC, Cardoso MG, Vasconcelos MM, Paula JJ, Oliveira EA, Lima EM Abstract Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) affects about 2-25% of the pediatric population and is associated with the presence of emotional and behavioral disorders. The purpose of this literature review was to identify studies focusing on mental disorders in children and adolescents with LUTD. The prevalence of these disorders is high - ranging from about 20 to 40% - in children with symptoms of LUTD and comorbidities. The presence of emotional and behavioral symptoms impact in the treatment of the dysfunction, self-esteem of pat...

Is there a relationship between tryptophan dietary intake and plasma levels of indoxyl sulfate in chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis?
CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that tryptophan dietary intake may not be a determinant factor to IS levels. However, it suggests that gut microbiota may play an important role in systemic inflammation in patients with CKD. PMID: 28001180 [PubMed - in process]

Lupus cystitis presenting with hidronephrosis and gastrointestinal involvement.
CONCLUSION: Lupus cystitis is a rare and underdiagnosed urinary manifestation of LES and the presence of mild urinary symptoms and abdominal pain may alert about this possibility. PMID: 28001179 [PubMed - in process]

Uromodulin: a new biomarker of fetal renal function?
CONCLUSION: There was a tendency of lower levels of Uromodulin values in fetuses with severe renal impairment prenatally. Thus, high levels of this protein in fetal amniotic fluid or fetal urine dosages possibly mean kidney function preserved. PMID: 28001177 [PubMed - in process]

Nodular glomerulosclerosis in a non-diabetic hypertensive, dyslipidemic, smoker patient: a case report.
CONCLUSION: The clinical features of the patient, and most importantly, the fact that he is a smoker, favor the diagnosis of "nodular glomerulosclerosis associated with smoking", a nomenclature proposed by some authors as an alternative to the term idiopathic nodular glomerulosclerosis. This clinical case report highlights idiopathic nodular glomerulosclerosis as a rare disease of little known etiopathogenesis; thus, further studies are necessary in order to elucidate the causes of this disease. Impact of gender in early structural changes of contrast induced nephropathy in rats.
CONCLUSION: Proximal tubular vacuolation is a very early change in CIN and is more intensive in female than in male rats. PMID: 28001174 [PubMed - in process]

Pregnancy after kidney transplantation: high rates of maternal complications.
CONCLUSION: Although the sample is limited, the number of miscarriages was higher than in the general population, with high rates of maternal complications. Sustained increase of creatinine suggests increased risk of graft loss in long-term. PMID: 28001172 [PubMed - in process]

Obesity and kidney disease: hidden consequences of the epidemic.
Authors: Kovesdy CP, Furth SL, Zoccali C Abstract Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, and its prevalence has been projected to grow by 40% in the next decade. This increasing prevalence has implications for the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and also for Chronic Kidney Disease. A high body mass index is one of the strongest risk factors for new-onset Chronic Kidney Disease. In individuals affected by obesity, a compensatory hyperfiltration occurs to meet the heightened metabolic demands of the increased body weight. The increase in intraglomerular pressure can damage the kidneys and raise the risk of...

Evaluation of diagnostic tests for cytomegalovirus active infection in renal transplant recipients.
CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that both methods are suitable and have almost equivalent accuracy for the detection of post-transplant cytomegalovirus replication. The choice for either test must take in consideration the demand, execution capability and cost-effectiveness at each institution. PMID: 28355408 [PubMed - in process]

Critical analysis of graft loss and death in kidney transplant recipients treated with mTOR inhibitors.
Authors: Andrade LG, Tedesco-Silva H Abstract Registry studies and systematic reviews have shown higher risk for mortality and graft loss in patients in use of mTOR inhibitors (mTORi) compared to calcineurin-based (CNI) immunosuppressive regimens. The majority of these studies pooled data from early trials using different strategies such as "de novo" combination of the high dose mTOR inhibitors with standard dose of CNI or high dose mTORi combined with mycophenolate. The large heterogeneity of these initial exploratory studies, many of them no longer in use, turns difficult any comparison with a well-defined standa...
