Vascular stiffness and healthy arterial aging in older patients with optimal blood pressure
CONCLUSION: Older people with optimal arterial blood pressure do not necessarily have HVA and could have c-fPWV values close to the limits established for CAS diagnosis.PMID:36638247 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2022-0123en

Primary antiphospholipid syndrome in a hemodialysis patient with recurrent thrombosis of arteriovenous fistulas.
CONCLUSION: Thrombophilias are inherited or acquired predispositions to vascular thrombosis and have been associated with thrombosis of the arteriovenous fistula. Patients on hemodialysis with recurrent vascular access thrombosis and presence of thrombophilia should be evaluated about the need for anticoagulant therapy with a vitamin K antagonist. Effectiveness, safety and cost reduction of long-term tunneled central venous catheter insertion in outpatients performed by an interventional nephrologist.
CONCLUSION: Our analysis shows that placement of LTCVC by a nephrologist in an OR of a dialysis center is effective, safe, and results in substantial cost savings. PMID: 31661542 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High ankle-brachial index predicts cardiovascular events and mortality in hemodialysis patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism
CONCLUSION: The presence of vascular calcifications and arterial stiffness was highly prevalent in our population. We suggest that ABI, a simple and cost-effective diagnostic tool, could be used at an outpatient basis to predict cardiovascular events in patients with severe SHPT undergoing HD.PMID:33979425 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2020-0218

Approach to thrombotic occlusion related to long-term catheters of hemodialysis patients: a narrative review.
Authors: Mendes ML, Barretti P, da Silva TN, Ponce D Abstract Currently, permanent catheters (pCVC) are becoming an alternative vascular access for long-stay patients in whom arteriovenous access cannot be made. Occlusion is a commun mechanical complication related to pCVC, leading to inadequate dialysis dose and frequent changes of local catheter location, which can cause exclusion of vascular sites. The aim of this study was to perform a narrative review of treatment of pCVC thrombotic occlusion in HD patients. The treatment of CVCP thrombosis typically consists on the saline infusion or administration of thrombo...

Clinical and histological features of patients with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis classified by immunofluorescence findings.
CONCLUSIONS: The only difference between the groups was higher vascular involvement in renal biopsy in negative immunofluorescence group. These new classification was satisfactory for the finding of etiology in one part of the cases. PMID: 29319772 [PubMed - in process]

Evaluation of variables associated with the patency of arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis created by a nephrologist.
CONCLUSION: Hemoglobin level in the recommended range has a favorable impact on late AVF patency and elevated blood pressure during surgery on the lower number of vascular accesses per patient. The high success rate indicates that it can be placed by trained nephrologists. PMID: 30080914 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Acute Kidney Injury Epidemiology in pediatrics.
Authors: Cleto-Yamane TL, Gomes CLR, Suassuna JHR, Nogueira PK Abstract We performed a search in the MEDLINE database using the MeSH term: "Acute Kidney Injury", selecting the subtopic "Epidemiology", and applying age and year of publication filters. We also searched for the terms: "acute renal failure" and "epidemiology" "acute tubular necrosis" and "epidemiology" in the title and summary fields with the same filters. In a second search, we searched in the LILACS database, with the terms: "acute renal injury", or "acute renal failure" or "acute kidney injury" and the age filter. All abstracts were evaluated by the...

Refractory ascites and graft dysfunction in early renal transplantation.
Discussion: Incomplete septal cirrhosis is an uncommon cause of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Its definition is not well known, morphological and pathophysiological. We have not found published cases of post-RT ascites secondary to this pathology, described as possibly associated with drugs, immune alterations, infections, hypercoagulability and genetic predisposition. Skeletal and cardiovascular consequences of a positive calcium balance during hemodialysis.
Authors: Elias RM, Moe S, Moysés RMA Abstract Patients on hemodialysis are exposed to calcium via the dialysate at least three times a week. Changes in serum calcium vary according to calcium mass transfer during dialysis, which is dependent on the gradient between serum and dialysate calcium concentration (d[Ca]) and the skeleton turnover status that alters the ability of bone to incorporate calcium. Although underappreciated, the d[Ca] can potentially cause positive calcium balance that leads to systemic organ damage, including associations with mortality, myocardial dysfunction, hemodynamic tolerability, vascul...
