Social inequalities and their impact on children's health: a current and global perspective
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the considerable advances observed in children's health in recent decades at a global level, the inequalities measured by different indicators show that they persist. This scenario deserves attention from researchers and decision-makers, especially in the context of the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has further intensified the situation of vulnerability and social inequalities in health around the world.PMID:34951980 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.11.004

Sleep and weight-height development.
CONCLUSIONS: The association between shorter sleep duration and risk of overweight and obesity is well established for all pediatric age groups. However, more evidence is needed to establish an association between insufficient sleep duration and height growth deficit. Pediatricians should include the encouragement of healthy sleep habits in their routine guidelines as an adjuvant in the prevention and management of excess weight. Severe COVID-19: understanding the role of immunity, endothelium, and coagulation in clinical practice
Resumo O SARS-CoV-2 é o responsável pela pandemia da COVID-19. O sistema imunológico é fator determinante no combate à infecção viral e, quando atua equilibrada e eficientemente, a doença é autolimitada e benigna.

Alprostadil associated with low molecular weight heparin to treat limb ischemia caused by SARS-CoV2
This article reports the case of 60-year-old female patient who presented with mild flu symptoms, which turned out to be a SARS-CoV2 infection, and ended up developing arterial thrombosis with limb ischemia in a private care hospital in Sorocaba, S ão Paulo, Brazil. Considering this progression, we decided to intervene with low molecular weight heparin and Alprostadil, achieving a good clinical outcome. Our description aims to identify key points and clinical signs that offer evidence of the therapeutic window and a treatment option for coagu latory presentations of COVID-19.Resumo A atual pandemia de coronav írus já ge...

A spatial model of the efficiency of T cell search in the influenza-infected lung
Publication date: 7 June 2016 Source:Journal of Theoretical Biology, Volume 398 Author(s): Drew Levin, Stephanie Forrest, Soumya Banerjee, Candice Clay, Judy Cannon, Melanie Moses, Frederick Koster Emerging strains of influenza, such as avian H5N1 and 2009 pandemic H1N1, are more virulent than seasonal H1N1 influenza, yet the underlying mechanisms for these differences are not well understood. Subtle differences in how a given strain interacts with the immune system are likely a key factor in determining virulence. One aspect of the interaction is the ability of T cells to locate the foci of the infection in time ...

Update of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) 2020 Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Management of Acute Limb Ischaemia in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Based on a Scoping Review of the Literature
CONCLUSION: Although the epidemiology of ALI has changed during the pandemic, the recommendations of the ESVS ALI Guidelines remain valid. The above mentioned minor modifications should be considered in patients with COVID-19 and ALI.PMID:34686452 | PMC:PMC8418912 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.08.028

Low performance of a SARS-CoV-2 point-of-care lateral flow immunoassay in symptomatic children during the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Despite its high specificity, in the present study, the sensitivity of LFI in children was lower (around 70%) than most reports in adults. In acute care settings, although a positive result is informative, a negative LFI test cannot rule out COVID-19 in children.PMID:34153236 | PMC:PMC8173459 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.04.010

Social and environmental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children
CONCLUSIONS: It is noteworthy that most studies published to date used a cross-sectional design and applied online screening questionnaires. The few studies with a longitudinal design suggest that these changes may have been transitory and more prevalent at the beginning of the pandemic.PMID:34571018 | PMC:PMC8463108 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.08.003
