Eliminating Potential Effects of Other Infections during Selection of Nonhuman Primates for COVID-19 Research
Comp Med. 2023 Jan 4;73(1):45-57. doi: 10.30802/AALAS-CM-21-000086. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study of nonhuman primates (NHP) can provide significant insights into our understanding numerous infectious agents. The etiological agent of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 virus, first emerged in 2019 and has so far been responsible for the deaths of over 4 million people globally. In the frenzied search to understand its pathogenesis and immunology and to find measures for prevention and control of this pandemic disease, NHP, particularly macaques, are the preferred model because they manifest similar clinical signs and immunologi...

Leptospirosis during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case report
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2023 Mar 13;65:e18. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202365018. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTSince SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) has been labeled as a pandemic, it took the spotlight in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with acute respiratory and systemic symptoms. Leptospirosis is one of the most common zoonoses in the world, yet it is mainly a disease of differential diagnosis for places that do not have it as an endemic. Due to the high burden of COVID-19 on the healthcare field, patients suffering from other infections may have been inadvertently neglected. COVID-19 infection can mimic o...

Multiple coinfections and Guillain Barr é syndrome following outdoor travel to the American Northeast
In this report, we discuss the known or suspected association of these infectious agents with Guillain-Barré syndrome. This case also highlights the importance, in the setting of endemic exposure, of screening for multiple coinfections that can be transmitted by the same arthropod vector.PMID:37091769 | PMC:PMC10120553 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2023.2167049

Topical repellents for malaria prevention
CONCLUSIONS: There is insufficient evidence to conclude that topical repellents can prevent malaria in settings where other vector control interventions are in place. We found the certainty of evidence for all outcomes to be low, primarily due to the risk of bias. A protective effect was suggested among high-risk populations, specially refugees, who might not have access to other standard vector control measures. More adequately powered clinical trials carried out in refugee camps could provide further information on the potential benefit of topical repellents in this setting. Individually randomized studies are also likel...
