Real-time estimation of disease activity in emerging outbreaks using internet search information
by Emily L. Aiken, Sarah F. McGough, Maimuna S. Majumder, Gal Wachtel, Andre T. Nguyen, Cecile Viboud, Mauricio Santillana Understanding the behavior of emerging disease outbreaks in, or ahead of, real-time could help healthcare officials better design interventions to mitigate impacts on affected populations. Most healthcare-based disease surveillance systems, however, have significant inherent reporting delays due t o data collection, aggregation, and distribution processes. Recent work has shown that machine learning methods leveraging a combination of traditionally collected epidemiological information and novel Inter...

Vascular plant extinction  in the continental United States and Canada.
This study represents the first effort to quantify extinctions among the vascular flora of North America north of Mexico since European settlement. We compiled data on apparently extinct species by querying plant conservation databases, searching literature, and vetting the resulting list with botanical experts. Because taxonomic opinion varies widely, we developed an Index of Taxonomic Uncertainty (ITU). The ITU ranges from A to F, with A indicating unanimous taxonomic recognition and F indicating taxonomic recognition by only a single author. The ITU allowed us to rigorously evaluate extinction rates. Our data suggest 65...

Parasitological and molecular search for leishmania natural infection in phlebotomine sand flies in peri-urban sites of an argentinean area endemic for tegumentary leishmaniasis
Acta Trop. 2021 Jul 21:106064. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2021.106064. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLeishmaniases are neglected tropical diseases caused by Leishmania spp. parasites transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies. In Argentina, the most endemic area of American Tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) has been Orán department, Province of Salta, where Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis prevails and Nyssomyia neivai is considered as its vector, although there is no accurate and sufficient information in this regard. The aim of this work was to search for natural infection by Leishmania spp. in sand flies from pe...

Poxvirus-Induced Vascular Angiogenesis Mimicking Pyogenic Granuloma
Abstract: The orf virus, a member of poxvirus family, is a zoonotic parapoxvirus endemic in many countries, mostly seen among sheep, goats, oxen, and may be transmitted to humans. Orf virus infections may induce ulceration, papulonodular, pustular, or ecthyma lesions in the skin. Rarely, orf virus provokes extensive vasculoendothelial proliferation by encoding an apparent homolog of the mammalian vascular endothelial growth factor family of molecules. The vascular endothelial growth factor–like viral gene product is expressed early during infection and could be responsible for the induction of endothelial proliferation...

“Chagas Express XXI”: A new ArtScience social technology for health and science education—A case study in Brazilian endemic areas of Chagas disease with an active search of chronic cases
ConclusionsCE21 is a social technology potentially useful for health and science education and active search of asymptomatic CD chronic cases. Moreover, this technology may be adapted to understand and to cooperate in other potentially epidemic situations, especially NTDs related.

Studies on Activities and Chemical Characterization of Medicinal Plants in Search for New Antimalarials: A Ten Year Review on Ethnopharmacology
Malaria is an endemic disease that affected 229 million people and caused 409 thousand deaths, in 2019. Disease control is based on early diagnosis and specific treatment with antimalarial drugs since no effective vaccines are commercially available to prevent the disease. Drug chemotherapy has a strong historical link to the use of traditional plant infusions and other natural products in various cultures. The research based on such knowledge has yielded two drugs in medicine: the alkaloid quinine from Cinchona species, native in the Amazon highland rain forest in South America, and artemisinin from Artemisia annua, a spe...

Characterizing white matter health and organization in atherosclerotic vascular disease: A diffusion tensor imaging study
This study examined differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) between AVD and healthy comparison (HC) participants, and described the regional patterns of FA in each group. AVD participants were hypothesized to have lower FA than HC participants, indicating abnormalities in white matter health or organization. 1.5T diffusion tensor imaging was performed in 35 AVD and 22 HC participants. Mean FA measures were calculated for the white matter of the whole brain, as well for individual lobes. Globally and in every brain region measured except the temporal lobes, there were significant effects of group where AVD participants ha...

Diagnostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor and interleukin-17 in association with molecular diagnosis of Wuchereria bancrofti infection
Conclusions VEGF-C and its inducing factor IL-17 are expected to gain more importance in filariasis. Targeting such factors might ameliorate the pathology in chronic filariasis.

Vascular plant endemism in the Western Carpathians: spatial patterns, environmental correlates and taxon traits
The Western Carpathians, as part of the Carpathian mountain range, are one of the most important centres of vascular plant endemism in Europe. We analysed the distribution patterns of 85 vascular plant taxa (excluding apomictic groups) that are endemic to this region (Western Carpathian endemics) or to the whole Carpathians (pan‐Carpathian endemics) across 125 operational geographic units (OGUs) delimited in the area, and assessed their niche and altitudinal breadths, habitat preferences, and life‐history traits. Spatial pattern of endemic richness was not random, but was geographically structured with the highest valu...

Autoantibodies to full body vascular cell junctions colocalize with MYZAP, ARVCF, desmoplakins I and II and p0071 in endemic pemphigus in Colombia, South America
ConclusionsImmune response to these vascular antigens is likely altering endothelial cells and vessel shapes, thus disturbing hemodynamic flow. The flow alterations likely lead to inflammation and may play a role in the atherogenesis often seen in these patients.

Differences in Risk Factors and Prevalence of Vascular Calcification between Pre-Dialysis and Hemodialysis Balkan Nephropathy Patients.
Conclusions: Lower prevalence of risk factors for VC in the BEN than non-BEN patients was found in pre-dialysis but not in HD group and this was reflected in the prevalence and severity of VC in the groups. Prevalence of VC and mean VC score were significantly lower in pre-dialysis BEN than in non-BEN patients but not for those on HD. PMID: 30344235 [PubMed - in process]
