Decreased health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with autoimmune hepatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: Reduced scores in the physical, emotional, and school domains were observed in pediatric autoimmune hepatitis patients compared to control patients. Abdominal pain and corticosteroid dose negatively influenced the health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with autoimmune hepatitis. Effect of conversion from calcineurin inhibitors to everolimus on hepatitis C viremia in adult kidney transplant recipients.
CONCLUSION: Our study did not show viral load decrease after conversion to EVR with maintenance of antiproliferative therapy. PMID: 29771270 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Autoimmune hepatitis in 828 Brazilian children and adolescents: clinical and laboratory findings, histological profile, treatments, and outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: In this large clinical series of Brazilian children and adolescents, autoimmune hepatitis-1 was more frequent, and patients with autoimmune hepatitis-2 exhibited higher disease remission rates with earlier response to treatment. Patients with autoimmune hepatitis-1 had a higher risk of death. PMID: 29856944 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical and epidemiological aspects of microcephaly in the state of Piau í, northeastern Brazil, 2015-2016.
CONCLUSIONS: The state of Piauí, like others in the northeastern region, faced an epidemic of congenital microcephaly between 2015 and 2016, presumably related to congenital Zika virus infection, more intense in the capital. Current challenges include the improvement of vector control, basic research, scaling-up of diagnostic tools for pre-natal screening of Zika virus, vaccines, and health care for affected children. Top searches on health topics? It may depend on where you live
You can learn a lot about a person’s medical concerns by looking at the health topics they’ve searched for online. It’s fascinating (and a bit creepy) to take a peek at what others are searching — and to compare what you find to what sends you online. I’ve posted before about how the health issues people report worrying about the most differ from those that are most common, deadly, or have the biggest impact on quality of life. There’s overlap, of course, but certain important conditions (such as lung disease, the third leading cause of death in 2015) did not make the top 10 list of health concerns in a 2015 su...

Hepatitis C in Hemodialysis Units: diagnosis and therapeutic approach.
Authors: Constancio NS, Ferraz MLG, Martins CTB, Kraychete AC, Bitencourt PL, Nascimento MMD Abstract According to data from the last census of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN), the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Brazilian hemodialysis units (HU) is 3.3%, about three times higher than what is reported for the Brazilian general population. Often, professionals working in HU are faced with clinical situations that require rapid HCV diagnosis in order to avoid horizontal transmission within the units. On the other hand, thanks to the development of new antiviral drugs, the cure of patients with HCV,...

Brazilian chronic dialysis survey 2017.
CONCLUSION: The absolute number of patients and rates of incidence and prevalence on dialysis continued to increase; the mortality rate tended to rise. There were obvious regional and state discrepancies in these rates. PMID: 30968930 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Brazilian Dialysis Census: analysis of data from the 2009-2018 decade.
CONCLUSION: The absolute number of patients and rates of incidence and prevalence in dialysis in the country increased substantially in the period, although there are considerable differences in rates by state. There has been a persistent increase in the use of venous catheters as an access for dialysis; and reduction in the number of patients with positive serology for hepatitis C. Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and acute kidney injury associated with cocaine use - Case report.
We report a case of a 38-year-old man chronic user of cocaine, alcohol, and cigarettes who had red urine, oliguria, swollen legs and eyelids, as well as the uremic symptoms anorexia, emesis, and mental confusion. He was admitted with acute kidney injury and performed six hemodialysis sessions during the first 16 days of hospitalization and then was transferred to a tertiary hospital for diagnostic investigation. Tests of ANF (antinuclear factor), ANCA, anti-DNA, serology for hepatitis B, C, and HIV virus were negative. A renal percutaneous biopsy revealed crescentic glomerulonephritis with mild tubular atrophy. The patient...

Association between interleukin-6 gene polymorphism and iron regulation in hemodialysis patients infected with HCV.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that IL-6 -174 G/C and -597 G/A polymorphisms may play a role in HCV susceptibility in HD patients. Additional prospective studies on a larger population are needed to confirm our findings. PMID: 32720970 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The spleen size in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
DISCUSSION: The patients had larger spleens and a greater range of spleen sizes than the controls. In patients, the association between larger and smaller spleen with lower and higher platelet counts, respectively, sparked the speculation of occurrence of hypersplenism and hyposplenism. Coronavirus in a patient with hepatitis C: case report
ABSTRACT In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named the infection with the new coronavirus, which appeared in December 2019 in China, as Covid-19, and defined it as a worldwide pandemic. There is not much evidence about the relationship between liver disease and Covid-19. Laboratory tests have played a fundamental role in confirming Covid-19, what is usually done by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sample. The present study reports the laboratory aspects of a patient with type C hepatitis diagnosed with Covid-19 with an unfavorable evolution, devoting special attention to laboratory tests that were almo...

Hepatitis C-related membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in the era of direct antiviral agents.
Authors: Abdelhamid WAR, Shendi A, Zahran M, Elbary EA, Fadda S Abstract Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is the most typical Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-associated glomerulopathy, and the available data about the utilization of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) in HCV-associated glomerulonephritis is inadequate. We evaluated the renal and viral response in two cases of HCV-related MPGN; the first caused by cryoglobulinemia while the second was cryoglobulin-negative. Both patients received immunosuppression besides DAA in different regimens. They achieved partial remission but remained immunosuppression-dep...

Liver Function Tests Profile in COVID-19 Patients at the Admission Time: A Systematic Review of Literature and Conducted Researches
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, by using the results of study, it could be suggested that the liver function tests assessment is critical assessment in COVID-19 patients at the admission time. This liver function test could be used as potential prognostic factor in COVID-19 severity in future.PMID:33912490 | PMC:PMC8059456 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_73_20
