Therapeutic advantage of anti‐vascular adhesion protein‐1 over anti‐α4 integrin antibody in concanavalin a‐induced hepatitis
Conclusions: Our findings show that VAP‐1 and α4 integrin have opposing effects in the Con A‐induced hepatic injury, which is associated with blocking the recruitment of CD4 lymphocytes and monocytic MDSCs, respectively. Moreover these data provide the rationale for a potential therapeutic approach to target adhesion molecules in autoimmune hepatitis. (HEPATOLOGY 2013.)

Routine childhood vaccination programme coverage, El Salvador, 2011-In search of timeliness.
Abstract While assessing immunization programmes, not only vaccination coverage is important, but also timely receipt of vaccines. We estimated both vaccination coverage and timeliness, as well as reasons for non-vaccination, and identified predictors of delayed or missed vaccination, for vaccines of the first two years of age, in El Salvador. We conducted a cluster survey among children aged 23-59 months. Caregivers were interviewed about the child immunization status and their attitudes towards immunization. Vaccination dates were obtained from children immunization cards at home or at health facilities. We refe...

Fermented soshiho-tang with Lactobacillus plantarum enhances the antiproliferative activity in vascular smooth muscle cell
Conclusions: The findings suggest that S-A144 exhibit enhanced inhibition of PDGF-BB-induced VSMC proliferation comparison to S-AOR through the suppression of cell cycle progression and expression of cell cycle-related proteins, along with the downregulation of Akt phosphorylation.

Macrophage Inflammatory Markers Are Associated With Subclinical Carotid Artery Disease in Women With Human Immunodeficiency Virus or Hepatitis C Virus Infection.
CONCLUSIONS: The macrophage inflammatory markers galectin-3-binding protein, soluble cluster of differentiation 163, and soluble cluster of differentiation 14 are significantly associated with carotid artery disease in the setting of HIV and HCV infection. The search is on for a hepatitis B drug, thanks to a million dollars in NIH grants to SLU
(Saint Louis University) Two grants from the National Institutes of Health will allow Saint Louis University researchers to build on breakthroughs in understanding the hepatitis B virus and begin the search for a drug to cure -- not just halt -- the illness.

Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 expression by biliary epithelium promotes persistence of inflammation by inhibiting effector T‐cell apoptosis
Conclusions: VCAM‐1 expression by cholangiocytes contributes to persistent inflammation by conferring a survival signal to α4β1 expressing proinflammatory T lymphocytes in CLD. (Hepatology 2013)

Immunohistochemical Expression of CD34 and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Hepatocellular ...
CONCLUSION: These results indicate that MVD in hepatocellular carcinoma is not directly correlated with VEGF expression, and suggest that other angiogenic factor may be involved in neovascularization of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, CD34 expression is closely associated with neovascular process in cirrhosis and hepatocelluar carcinoma.

Insulin-Resistance HCV infection-related affects vascular stiffness in normotensives
Arterial stiffness evaluated as pulse wave velocity, is an early marker of vascular damage and an independent predictor for cardiovascular events. We investigated if the insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia chronic hepatitis C virus infection-related could influence arterial stiffness.

Portopulmonary hypertension in United Kingdom: A contemporary, national, observational study
ConclusionPoPH presents in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic causes of portal hypertension. There was no correlation between the severity of liver disease and severity of PoPH. The commonest cause in United Kingdom is alcoholic cirrhosis.

Gigantic 25-cm abdominal aortic aneurysm
A 69-year-old man presented to the hospital in June 1993 with a prominent, visibly pulsatile abdominal mass (A). The patient had a history of smoking, hypertension, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis and had noted a pulsation in his abdomen for several years but had never sought medical attention. Physical examination demonstrated a very large, nontender, pulsatile mass with a soft bruit. Translumbar aortography revealed a gigantic infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) measuring 25 cm in diameter with a large mural thrombus extending to the aortic bifurcation and both common iliac arteries (B).

Search for a cure for chronic hepatitis B infection: How close are we?
Authors: Phyo WW, Soh AY, Lim SG, Lee GH Abstract Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains a significant unmet medical need, with 240 million chronically infected persons worldwide. It can be controlled effectively with either nucleoside/nucleotide-based or interferon-based therapies. However, most patients receiving these therapies will relapse after treatment withdrawal. During recent years, the advances in molecular biology and immunology have enabled a better understanding of the viral-host interaction and inspired new treatment approaches to achieve either elimination of the virus from the liver or durable immune con...
