Antiretroviral Therapy for HIV Infection Induced-Neuropathic Pain, A Narrative Review
CONCLUSION: While ART assists in suppressing HIV and may help to lessen neurocognitive impairments, long-term use incurs toxicity to the central nervous system (CNS). Consequently, future studies must explore the effects of ART on adaptations in distinct regions of the CNS as well as the pathophysiological feature of ART-induced NP.PMID:36056867 | DOI:10.2174/1570162X20666220902111358

Anthony Fauci, loved and hated, plots his next move: ‘I'm not going to sit in my house’
In 1984, when Anthony Fauci took over as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), his wife gave him a plant for the new office. Both the palm and the 81-year-old physician are still there, the giant plant now crowding the office of one of the most celebrated—and polarizing—scientific figures in U.S. history. But not for much longer. Fauci announced on 22 August that he would step down at the end of the year from both NIAID and his post as the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden. “What am I going to do with this plant? It’s a monster. I can’t fit it in any other plac...

Patient-Reported Symptom Burden of Charcot–Marie–Tooth Disease Type 1A: Findings From an Observational Digital Lifestyle Study
Conclusions: Patient-reported burden of CMT1A is high, influenced by difficulties in using limbs, fatigue, pain, and impaired quality of life. Burden severity appears to differ across the population, possibly driven by differences in rehabilitative and prescription-based interventions, and country-specific health care variability.

Jonathan Van Ness: We Are Still Not Taking Monkeypox Seriously Enough
I remember the day the U.S. confirmed its first case of monkeypox. It was mid-May, and I had just interviewed Steven Thrasher for my podcast, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness. He has a new book out, The Viral Underclass, about how different classes of people bear an unfair burden of the cost of viruses—fitting, because since then, monkeypox cases have increased exponentially, primarily affecting queer men. Watching the government’s botched response to monkeypox has been surreal, and in many ways, I believe it’s been fueled by homophobia and transphobia. When an outbreak affects mainly men who have ...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 10066: HIV-Associated Systemic Sclerosis: Literature Review and a Rare Case Report
We report a rare case of HIV-associated SSc who was referred to us for pain management in her mandibular teeth. A 44-year-old female patient diagnosed with HIV-associated SSc reported a complaint of pain in the lower posterior teeth region. Physical examination revealed typical features of SSc. The pain in her mandibular teeth was due to food lodgement, and she was advised to use toothpaste with a powered toothbrush and mouth stretching exercises, followed by oral prophylaxis. The patient responded well to therapy. HIV-associated SSc is an extremely rare occurrence, with an obscure pathogenic mechanism of HIV-associated au...

Systemic lupus erythematosus following human papillomavirus vaccination: A case ‐based review
AbstractSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous systemic autoimmune diseases (AIDs) with many pathogenic factors, ranging from genetic to epigenetic to environmental. The human papillomavirus (HPV), a viral infectious agent, is a common contributor to the onset and exacerbation of SLE. HPV infections are more prevalent among SLE patients than healthy individuals, bringing about a substantial need for treatment. While HPV recombinant gene vaccines are accepted as a universal method for infection prevention, they pose a risk for adverse events such as fever, joint pain, and rashes. In rare cases, they might eve...

What to Know About the Monkeypox Drug TPOXX —And Why It ’ s So Hard to Get
Monkeypox, which federal officials declared a public health emergency on August 4, is not as contagious as the other ongoing public health emergency in the U.S.: COVID-19. Monkeypox primarily spreads through contact with infected skin lesions. Theoretically, containing monkeypox should therefore be more feasible, as long as testing, vaccines, and treatments are accessible. But in reality, the rollouts of all three approaches have faced major challenges. Getting the antiviral drug tecovirimat, also known as TPOXX, is particularly difficult. Here’s what to know about the antiviral drug treatment TPOXX. What is TPOXX? T...
