A mediator for malaria stickiness in A versus O blood
Nature Medicine 21, 307 (2015). doi:10.1038/nm.3837 Authors: Liliana Mancio-Silva & Maria M Mota Malaria is thought to have shaped the worldwide distribution of human ABO blood but the underlying molecular details of this process have only recently started to be revealed. A new study provides insights on how malaria parasites interact with ABO blood group sugars, mediating rosetting events that cause severe disease.

Severe Community Acquired Pneumonia (SCAP)
Publication date: Available online 15 April 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Ajit Vigg Although there are no large epidemiological studies from India, mortality data on total number of deaths from lower respiratory tract infection are available. Whereas the world wide mortality of CAP in hospitalised patients varies from 14%–50%, the reported mortality in India varies from 3.3% to 40% with higher rates in elderly & in those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) care. Use of clinical scores like CURB-65, & CRB 65 help to stratify risk of severe disease & need for hospitalisation & ICU...

Reported off-leash frequency and perception of risk for gastrointestinal parasitism are not associated in owners of urban park-attending dogs: A multifactorial investigation
This study was conducted to establish the overall level of perceived risk of parasitism in dogs, the frequency of unleashing dogs in parks, and to determine if dog owners’ risk perceptions of parasite transmission among humans and dogs are associated with the reported frequency of unleashing dogs. From June to September 2010, 645 surveys were administered to dog owners in nine city parks in Calgary, Alberta, by the lead author to explore dog-walking behaviours in parks under differing leashing regulations. From these, a subset of 316 questionnaires were analyzed to examine associations between behavioural and dog demogra...

The role of Blastocystis sp. as an etiology of irritable bowel syndrome
Conclusions It is most likely that the presence of Blastocystis in the human intestine plays a significant role in IBS. On the other hand, it is still not known if Blastocystis is the etiological agent responsible for this type of gut dysfunction. There are many reports in the literature which are mutually exclusive. More studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Scabies: Clinical manifestations and diagnosis
Conclusions Scabies still remains a major public health problem worldwide. Research is hindered mainly due to difficulty in obtaining the material from infested people as well as a lack of an in vitro system. To date, there is no diagnostic method for detecting scabies infection, which would give a 100% reliable result. Each of the methods mentioned above has some limitations in use. It seems that the sensitivity of those methods will vary, depending on a patient's clinical features.

NLM Project to Improve Malaria Diagnosis Wins HHS Funding (NLM in Focus)
Researchers at the National Library of Medicine are collaborating on a software tool to speed up the diagnosis of malaria. They've developed an automated system for detecting and counting parasites in blood films. The goal is to develop a version for smartphones so it can be used in the field. The project, "Watch it, Parasite!," is an idea so promising, the US Department of Health and Human Services will provide support from the HHS Innovation Ventures Fund Program to take this early-stage idea to the next level.

The geography of malaria genetics in the Democratic Republic of Congo: A complex and fragmented landscape
Publication date: May 2015 Source:Social Science & Medicine, Volume 133 Author(s): Margaret Carrel , Jaymin Patel , Steve M. Taylor , Mark Janko , Melchior Kashamuka Mwandagalirwa , Antoinette K. Tshefu , Ananias A. Escalante , Andrea McCollum , Md Tauqeer Alam , Venkatachalam Udhayakumar , Steven Meshnick , Michael Emch Understanding how malaria parasites move between populations is important, particularly given the potential for malaria to be reintroduced into areas where it was previously eliminated. We examine the distribution of malaria genetics across seven sites within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC...

Oral dirofilariasis: Report of a case arising in the buccal vestibular region
We report the case of a patient which is the 13th reported case of dirofilaria infection in the oral cavity. The patient presented with swelling in the lower buccal vestibule; however, a parasitic infection was not suspected in the differential diagnosis. The diagnosis was reached only after histopathological examination. The clinical features and management of this interesting lesion is discussed.

The potential of canine sentinels for reemerging Trypanosoma cruzi transmission
Conclusions Targeted control of reemerging transmission can be achieved by improved understanding of T. cruzi in canine populations. Our results suggest that dogs may be useful sentinels to detect re-initiation of transmission following insecticide treatment. Integration of canine T. cruzi blood sampling into existing interventions for zoonotic disease control (e.g. rabies vaccination programs) can be an effective method of increasing surveillance and improving understanding of disease distribution.

Does the use of salmon frames as bait for lobster/crab creel fishing significantly increase the risk of disease in farmed salmon in Scotland?
Publication date: Available online 8 May 2015 Source:Preventive Veterinary Medicine Author(s): Alexander G Murray Salmon farming is an important economic activity, and employer, particularly for remoter areas of Scotland; crustacean fisheries are also significant small businesses in these areas. Salmon frames (the head and spine that remain after evisceration and filleting) are sometimes used to bait the creel pots used to catch lobsters and crabs. These frames may contain pathogens that could potentially be spread to salmon farms in the vicinity of creel fisheries. Therefore, an analysis has been carried out for key pat...

A brief review on biomarkers and proteomic approach for malaria research
Publication date: April 2015 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 8, Issue 4 Author(s): Vivek Bhakta Mathema , Kesara Na-Bangchang Malaria remains as one of the significant health threat to people living in countries throughout tropical and subtropical zones. Proteomic studies of Plasmodium, the protozoan causing malaria, is essential for understanding its cellular structure, growth stage-specific expression of protein metabolites and complex interaction with host. In-depth knowledge of the pathogen is required for identification of novel biomarkers that can be utilized to develop diagnostic tests an...

Profile and geographical distribution of reported cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in Northwestern Saudi Arabia, from 2010 to 2013
Conclusions The lack of data concerning the parasite, the sand fly fauna and the existing transmission cycles in Hail province make difficult to interpret the reported results and to follow up the spatio-temporal evolution of the disease.

Challenging loop—mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique for molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii
Conclusions The obtained results demonstrate that the LAMP technique has a greater sensitivity for detection of T. gondii. Furthermore, these findings indicate that primers based on the RE are more suitable than those based on the B1 gene. However, the B1-LAMP assay has potential as a diagnostic tool for detection of T. gondii.

Epidemiology and impact of F. hepatica exposure in high-yielding dairy herds
Publication date: Available online 5 June 2015 Source:Preventive Veterinary Medicine Author(s): Alison Howell , Matthew Baylis , Rob Smith , Gina Pinchbeck , Diana Williams The liver fluke Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite with a worldwide distribution and is the cause of important production losses in the dairy industry. The aim of this observational study was to assess the prevalence of exposure to F. hepatica in a group of high yielding dairy herds, to determine the risk factors and investigate their associations with production and fertility parameters. Bulk milk tank samples from 606 herds that supply a sing...
